Sonnet 800Mhz question |

I am expecting my 800Mhz upgrade to arrive soon but have a problem. I upgraded to 9.2.2 using OS9 helper before realizing that Sonnet's enabler software is not compatible. I have read that substituting a 9.1 system file will allow the enablers to run in 9.2. What is the system file? When I look in my system folder I see the finder, Mac OS ROM & system resources files but no "system file". Where do I look or is it one of the aforementioned files that I must replace. |

John, I'm the author of OS9 Helper. I have been in contact with Sonnet on several occasions about this matter. It sounds like they have finally given in decided to add 'unsupported' support. Please contact me at bralston@mac.com ASAP. I won't specifically mention your name anywhere, but I have a list of a dozen or so users that will want to hear about this. -Ben |

I've already got 9.2.2 running. What I/we were after was the method you used to get the original Sonnet extension to load in 9.2.2. Since it does look like there is a fix on the way from Sonnet I can wait. |

Geez, me and big mouth! I contacted Tech Support through the Service Form, described my situation about having a certain piece of software that MUST run on 9.2.2 and they sent me an experimental updated version of the Crescendo/Encore Install software that is only beta (they are still testing it) and it does allow you to run 9.2.2. Please don't use my name if you all start running to Sonnet. The software will probably be out really soon anyway as I'm sure they have run into this problem already. So far things are promising although I do have unexpected Netscape quite with Type 3 errors every so often. |

PS: go to OS9Forever, don't patch things on your own! |

John, are you also referring to the System Suitcase? I tried patching the 9.1 System Suitcase with resources from the 9.2.2 version shortly after I got the card but had no luck. Would you provide a precise description of what you did to get the Sonnet extension to load in 9.2.2. I'd rather not have to call Sonnet support unless you can tell us exactly who to ask about this. |

John, please spill the beans, sonnet support told me no, no, and never regarding 9.2.2 and sonnet software, they did not tell me a workaround. |

Sorry ..... I should have said Sonnet sells "cache enabler" software that allows pre-G3 machines to more thoroughly enjoy the OSX experience ..... but my point remains the same. |

John I am very interested in the work-around. Can you elaborate? 9.2.2 is a much snappier OS than 9.1, especially on boot. Why in God's name Sonnet doesn't just patch their installer is beyond me. They sell software that will allow X to run on pre-G3 machines but draw the line at 9.2 because Apple doesn't support it? Sounds a bit 2-faced to me. However, the card is probably worth the software hassle in the end run. Thanks for any hacks you might offer. |

True, you cannot use OS 9.2.2 with the software that Sonnet sends out with hardware. You are limited to 9.1. The system file you are looking for is called System. Contact customer support though as there IS a way around this! I'm running 9.2.2 with a Sonnet G4/800 on a 7600 and its REALLY fast! |

The file is called "System" and it must be there if it's bootable. |
