Tweaking with Upgrade Cards? |

This is for those of you out there with tweakable CPU cards. Have you been able to push the CPU beyond spec or the bus beyond 50Mhz (for the PowerSurge models)? If so, how well does this run under OS X? Right now I have a 400Mhz/50Mhz G4 card that can run just fine at 420Mhz/50Mhz, and if I mucked with the RAM, I could push the bus a little higher (I have too much 70ns RAM in the machine). This card will be moving into my 8600 soon (only 2 16MB 70ns DIMMS, the rest are 60ns EDO or FPM... Kensington and OWC), but I would like to know people's experiences with 'overclocking' their setup through upgrade cards. |

I bought the stuipd card last year when i thought that the powercomputing G3 300 (upgrade) was fast. and when i did not have X so i was not thinking of overcloclocking at all and it was the cheapest one Did you get the bus overclocked? |

Overclocking the J700 well... First you need a G3/4 card which can be over clocked which leaves out Sonett cards. Then you follow the info that would have come with the CPU upgrade card. There are jumpers to set on the CPU card and the software will likely have some settings to make. That of course is the short version and as much as I can tell you without more info on what card you have etc. |

I'm running my XLR8 G3 500mhz @ 550 mhz @ 55mhz bus for over a year no problems in a J700/S900 Umax clone. It will run even faster but decided not to go for the bleeding edge. I've got the Carrier card and started with a 300mhz card which ran great @ 350mhz. It would run fine @ 61mhz bus but didn't want to push things too much. Some machines run faster then others and every cpu chip is a bit different. |

Hmm, OS 10.2 is being odd when I overclock the system bus beyond 50 Mhz in my 8600. At 52Mhz and up, the Dock will launch, but the Finder can't... and all apps I try to launch will get up, but then die the moment I try anything. Oh so odd... |

I am using an XLR8 MachCarrier 400 pushed to 500/50mhz/1 meg cache in my 8500 w/256 meg (2-OWC 128's) interleaved running 10.2.1 (6D52) no problems. |

9500/132 Powerlogix G3 400 352mb various brands ( 2 owc 128 mb Chips) interleaved. It didn't like the 10x setting ( would only boot at 420mhz). Pushed the bus up to 55mhz with 8x. Running stable at 440/220. 1mb cache. I was suprised at how perky OS X was. Ran Speedrun benchmark. Comparable numbers to a new world G3 450 mhz machine. |
