I just found a strange firewire problem that I cannot understand at all. Here is my findings. I purchase a mapower firewire box with an oxford911 chipset. I initially want to install a CDRW in there, but after some incorrectly burned cds I had to remove the CDRW anf try the box with a hard disk. Well the problem with it is that I can read from the disk with no problem and with a good speed, but I cannot write. When I try to write somethiong I have a nice crach to my system. It starts to copy and stops after 512Kb. I did not had any problems with the firewire card as I use it with a DV camera. I have an 9500 with OS 10.1.5 and an orangelink card I hope that you can help me. PS. I just remembered that I flashed the cards firmware to the january of 2002 version of the firmware. And also the bix works perfectly with MacOS 9 burning CDs and accesing the disk. |

I remember now that I had a similar problem with a FireWire drive at one point, and it was solved by reformatting it. It must have had something to do with the drivers installed on the drive. Unfortunately, I can't remember which formatting software I used. It would have been either Apple's Drive Setup (from Mac OS 9.x), or the Disk Utility from Mac OS X, or Intech's Hard Disk SpeedTools. In any case, reformatting with a different utility may help. |

Another thing I should have mentioned is that this card uses the Opti Chipset for the Firewire side. |

Well as I have the problem and I want to fix it, I would like to ask Ryan if there could be a caching problem (The copy is stopping after so little data copied). Is there a possibility that the firewire driver thinks that the computer is a G3 and the hardware does not comply with that the driver expects. The hardware for exmple could think that there is a bigger caching in the Firewire ti IDE chipset and pump data to it even if it cannot accept it. The only reason that the RATOC card works, thanks to marcush, in my openion is that this card has bigger caching for the puched data. Is there a way to fix this with a software. I can run any test you think that can help you to fix the problem. In case that there is no way to fix the problem please tell me in order to purchase the RATOC card. |

I have a Power Tower Pro w/Sonnet G4 800. I had the same problem with a CompUSA Firewire/USB card. No matter what slot I put it in the machine would freeze during copies. I now have a Ratoc Firewire/USB 2.0 card and it works in every slot except for the 5th for some reason. I have no explanation except in my case the problem has been either the PCI card or the slot it is sitting in. |

Well I have some more data on this. I have upgraded to 10.2.1 and the problem continues. But here are my findings after I saw the verbose mode data shown in console. I have to say that I am using an Orangelink USB2 and firewire card and an oll USB 1.1 card. (In case you want to ask I tried to remove the old card the firewire problem is not resolved. Here are the findings: When the system starts up I can see the following messages Nov 12 18:25:11 Mac9500 mach_kernel: Can't find superclass for 19CurioSCSIController : 24IOSCSIParallelController Nov 12 18:25:12 Mac9500 mach_kernel: map_and_patch(): Extension "com.macsales.iokit.AppleCurio4K78" Error binding OSObjects. Thanks a lot and you need any more stuff from my logs you can just ask. |

My 10.1.5 system worked fine with my firewire drives, although I also noticed something interesting.... Although I could consistently read data from the drives up to about 20MBytes per second, writing data always maxed at 3.5Mbytes/sec. This seemed odd to me, and I meant to mention it to Ryan, but forgot. I am using the Macally combo card, and the mac is a Powerwave G4/450. |

Hmm. That is a strange problem--I'm not sure what to suggest. I know that Mac OS X 10.0 had some trouble with Firewire drives, but I had thought that 10.1 was much better with that. Sorry I can't come up with anything very useful on this one. |
