Hello all, Well, I really screwed up this time. My PTP will only boot to OS 9 CD now and no drives show up. I read all I could find on the Miles 2 OSX install process. Here's what I did: 1. I reformatted all drives with Intech's Hard Disk SpeedTools 3.5 as per Ryan Rempel's suggestion -f or some reason the standard Apple HD formatting wouldn't work on my drives. The drives all were recognized. 2. • On SCSI Bus 0: Western Digital WDE4360N 4.35 GB HD (ID = 0) I installed OS 9.2.2 using the OS 9 installer the the os9forever updaters. • SCSI Bus 2: RAID HD: 36.68 GB Seagate (Revision # 010A) (Product ID: ST336706LW) (ID=1) I installed plain ole OS 9.1. • I left SCSI Bus 2: RAID HD: 36.68 GB Seagate (Revision # 010A) (Product ID: ST336706LW) (ID=0) empty for the Jaguar install. Upon restart all disks were recognized - no problems. Here's where things got screwy... 3. For the Intio Miles U2W (card revision 1, card vendor ID 1101I downloaded the OS X.2 Firmware, shut the machine down, unplugged the drive moles and cord from card, restarted, flashed the card, shut down, re-hooked the drives & card up and re-started. The result was that the Miles 2 drives would not show up on the desktop but the WD OS9.2.2 drive would. 4. I then did the unhook-rehook process above and used the BackFlash for the MilesU2W to restore your firmware to the original version. The Miles drives would then show up again. 5. I then installed XPostFacto 2.2.4 onto the SCSI Bus 2: RAID HD: 36.68 GB Seagate (Revision # 010A) (Product ID: ST336706LW) (ID=0) that I had left open for the Jaguar install. When it restarted with the Jaguar CD in the drive the OSX installer didn't start up but I did get the diagnostic lines that basically stated that it could not recognize the Miles 2 drive. 6. On a lark I thought I would try to re-flash the Miles card with the OS X.2 Firmware - once again, no drives after startup. I thought that maybe the Western Digital 9.2.2 drive was conflicting with the OS 9.1 startup so - HERE'S WHERE I REALLY SCREWED UP - I started up off the OS 9 CD (only the WD 9.2.2 disk showed) dragged the 9.2.2 system folder to the trash - did not empty it - just left the system folder in it - and restarted. I thought this might allow the OS 9.1 Seagate drive to be recognized. No No No. Instead, I got the blinking ? disk of death. 7. Upon restart with the OS 9 CD none of the disks would show up the Apple Drive Setup could see the disks but they are all"not supported." Since this startup CD is a personal custom tech CD I have Softraid 2.2.2 and old versions of SpeedTools & FWB toolkit on it. I ran SoftRaid - the disks showed up but none could be formatted. Same thing in SpeedTools 3. In FWB I couldn't see the Seagates but I could mount the Western Digital. I then pulled the 9.2.2 system folder out of the trash & put it back on the drive. 8. Upon restart I still get the blinking ? disk. I just shut the whole thing down this morning, pulled the cards, ram, battery and have it sitting at home right now. Oh yeah, I did try the cuda reset, pram zap every step of the way. I hope someone knows what to do in this situation - quite a pickle. I know tm311 has the same Miles2 & seagate setup as I do - maybe he'll chime in here. I'll be cross-posting on the XPostFacto page in a bit. As always, any help is more than appreciated. Last night I tried to erase the drives with the ATTO ExpressTools and had no luck. I was able to erase the Western Digital drive no problem. I then formatted with SpeedTools 3.5 that and installed OS 9.1. No such luck with the Seagates. ATTO failed during the erase process as did SpeedTools. They don't even list properly - they come up as: Seagade 3D3#'0&LG - and yes, that is Seagade with a "D." I guess my drives are gone - at least I backed everything up on CDs & a Firewire drive before starting this long mistake. I bought the drives on 3/28/02 though MacGurus and will be contacting Seagate today to see if my warranty is still valid. If I do get some new drives and want to do the OSX install (starting w/10xx) what card would you recommend - being that the Miles2 seems to be a bit touchy? Thnaks for your help everyone, Adam |

Adam, I don't know for sure, but I didn't "unhook" my Seagate when flashing the Miles U2W card either way, and all worked fine. Maybe you could try leaving the Seagates attahced when flashing the Miles card. Also, if the disks are still not visible, try Apple's "Drive Setup" (version 2.0.7+), locate and highlight the unmounted disks, then choose "Update Driver" from the "Functions" menu, then reboot. Then maybe you can do your Raid set up as you discribe in your last post. Good luck. primal1 |

Well everyone, Via the XLR8 Emergency Disk I made I was able to restore the firmware on the PTP. I then rebooted with my custom OS 9 CD with Miles 2 Backflash, SpeedTools 3.5 & SoftRaid 2.2.2 installed on it. Still trouble. I was able to format the 4 GB Western Digital Drive no problem. I then shut down, unplugged the moles & unhooked the Seagates from Miles 2 & restarted. I then backflashed the Miles 2 to it's original state - then shut down, rehooked everything & restarted w/ the custom CD. The Western Digital Drive showed up but no Seagates. I then ran SpeedTools which said that the Seagates had no Mac Volumes/Partitions on them. SpeedTools would not let me do anything to the drives (ie: no buttons would work EXCEPT formatting) I tried the format button - which supposedly does a low-level format. The format process seemingly went ok, meaning it took a long time but after the formatting, when I tried to create a Mac Volume.Partition SpeedTools would not let me. AAARRRGGH. Same thing for SoftRaid - blinking disks in the list. I did a low level format at the end of which it the alert beeped - SR rescanned and the drives still were blinking grey. Apple's Hard Disk Toolkit shows the drives but says they're unsupported. What is going on here? What can I do? any suggestions? What would happen if I put one of these drives on the internal SCSI chain instead of the Miles 2. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks, Adam. |

Alright - I'm going home from work now to battle the PTP. I created a boot disk with the old Miles 2 firmware on it as well as an xlr8 emergency disk. We'll see what happens. Thanks, Adam |

http://www.initio.com/support/index-download.htm Adam, My experiences with the Miles U2W card and Jaguar are a bit complex, but I'm able to run both Jaguar and Mac OS 9.2.2 (with the help of XPostFacto 2.4.4 and OS9Helper) on an original IBM 2.0 GB disk on SCSI Bus 0, ID=0, and Mac OS 9.1 on a Seagate 18.3 Gig drive running off a Miles U2W card (SCSI Bus 2, ID=0). Your set up is much more complex, but maybe some of the following will help you solve your problem. The real test for me was to be able to "see" and access the Seagate drive while booted into OS X. To do so, I need to flash the Miles firmware with the Mac OS X.2 driver (while booted into Mac OS 9.1 on the Seagate disk), then boot into Jaguar using XPostFacto. All drives then show up in Jaguar. However, when I want to re-boot back into Mac OS 9.1 on the Seagate drive, I must boot to a Mac OS 9.1 Install CD, mount a Zip disk with the Initio "backflash" firmware and flash the Miles card with version 1.05 firmware (Note: Initio recommends 1.06 for Raid set ups), then use the "Start Up Disk" control panel of my CD to re-boot into Mac OS 9.1 on the Seagate drive. When I've finally re-booted into Mac OS 9.1 on the Seagate drive, my Jaguar disk is no longer visible. I then start a newer version of "Drive Setup" (version 2.0.7), locate and highlight the unmounted disk at SCSI Bus 0, ID=0, then choose "Update Driver" from the "Functions" menu. It appears that the disk driver is somehow damaged or changed in the process so it must be reloaded to the disk. I then re-boot and all disks now show and are accessable. This is a major pain, but works. I am now in the process of converting the Seagate disk to my main Jaguar disk, with the original IBM disk converted to a Mac OS 9.1 disk, which I hope will eliminate this process. I hope you can use some of this to solve your problem. |

The first thing to address since you zapped the PRAM would be to restore it's contents by booting from the XLR8 rescue disk. Hopefully you've already made one or have another Mac handy with which to make one from the disk image on the XLR8 software CD. This happened several times while I had an XLR8 G4/450 MPe SSE card. It has also happened a few times with the Sonnet G4/800 I have now. The blinking question mark in your situation leads me to believe that your PRAM is corrupted or the contents have been emptied. Other symptoms I had were that not even the OS9 CD would boot my Power Tower Pro. At times I've had to pull out all of the PCI cards except video to even get the floppy to boot, but this is what has always gotten me back up from a disaster like this. Once you have this problem taken care of you should be back in business. |
