My daughter was using my computer last night and was playing "The Sims" when it crashed and now at osX boot i get a broken icon. I have tried various XPF start-up tricks, but to no avail. I also rebuilt the directory with DW...Is there anything that anyone can suggest? I am about sick of this and while i say that i can't justify a new machine...its times like this when i want to take the plunge....UGGGGGGGGGGGGGG! |

You can do the updates to 10.1 if you go to the apple downpload site and read the page carefully to choose just the right installer. it took me a few times to get it right, but it can be done. |

Speaking of downgrading to 10.1.2, have you (or anyone else on this list) been able to apply the upgrades (i.e. 10.1.4, 10.1.5). I can't seem to do this because 10.1.2 needs an "Installer Updater". I tried installing this updater but when it comes time to choose the target hard drive, they are all grayed out and not selectable. Its not the 8gig barrier that I have read about because all my hard drives are 2 and 4 gigs respectively (and SCSI--stock Umax S900 hardware). Anyone know what's going on? --bondster!! |

I was able to run the 10.1.2 Install disk again and then update back to 10.1.5. This solved my broken folder and did not cause me the need to wipe my partion and re-install all my applications... |

TimJudyM, all I can say is, I feel your pain!! But please have patience... I was having the worst time getting OS X 10.2 Server to work after having migrated from basic OS X 10.1 I too kept getting the broken icon folder, and multiple reboots didn't help. It even went as bad as having my entire Disk and all its contents wiped out completely. The funny thing is, after rotating a few pci cards and hitting the cuda switch (i have a Umax S900 with a NewerTech G3 333 Mhz card and 416 Meg ram), then playing with the throttle, I got my mac to finally boot! And its been good ever since. I'll be upgrading to an ATI Rage 128 pci card and I am afraid to see what it might do to my mac, but hey, you gotta be in it to win it!~! --Bondster!! P.S. XPostFacto rocks!! It has put new life into my Umax! |

I think I have had it with trying to run osX on my PTP....sorry guys but i think I am jumping ship, I think I am going to buy a B&W G3 and migrate all my stuff to it...that will get me a few more years, But I am no longer having fun dealing with crashes in osX...Thanks Ryan for 2 great years, your software ROCKS!!!!!! |

it can't hurt to try. Have you checked the disk? it may have somehow mannaged a bad block on the X part of the drive. |

I have done the command V and command S and still i get the happy face only. Is this a situation where changing the "throttle" speed might help? |

after telling xpostfacto to reboot hold command V this is verbose mode but for some reason this seems to enable sooner than checking the verbose. |

I have tried verbose and single user mode and both give me a happy mac which lasts forever....no curser...If i had to guess it would have something to do with monitor resolution??? Thinking she changed resolutions to play the game and then it froze?? Shooting darts here while i shop for G4 deals...which are seeminly no where to be had...smalldog had 733's for 1299...CRAZY!!! I miss my PTP when it is broken like this. |

Have you tryed Verbose mode? This should make text fly onto the screen and will stop with something like 'can't find root device. we are hanging here' after that copt eveything on the screen and type it up here. |
