Can't Install |

I'm trying to finally take the plunge and add OS X to my legacy PMAC 7600. But, I can't figure out how to make the XPostFacto software actually install anything. Help!!! Setup: Pmac 7600, XLR8 carrier + OWC Mercury 450 Mhz G4, 256 megs RAM, 20 gig Seagate internal SCSI HD, ATI Radeon (original), generic USB PCI card, Skyline Farallon wireless PCI, running System 9.2.1 using Apple HD drivers. I downloaded XPostFacto. Inserted Mac OS X 10.0.3 installer (I've got all the updaters to take it from this up to 10.2.1). Opened XPostFacto. I expected to be asked (as per the XPostFacto instructions) "where's the install CD" and "which volume do you want to install to", but instead I get nothing. The XPostFacto menus appear, but no dialogue box appears. I tried experimenting with the "install extensions", "reinstall extensions, " and "reinstall BootX"... but nothing I've tried actually seems to begin any kind of installation procedure. What am I doing wrong? Mike |

Sorry about not responding sooner--I've been a bit behind on the tech support. It sounds like you've discovered a bug of some kind in XPostFacto. You might try taking a look at the XPostFacto Log file (in your Preferences folder) to see if it indicates anything interesting. One possibility is that upgrading to the latest version of the Carbon libraries might help. (Version 3.0 of XPostFacto won't be Carbon anymore, which may actually solve a few problems of this kind). You wouldn't happen to have a copy of CodeWarrior, so that you could run XPostFacto under the debugger? |

I've had similiar problems with different versions of XPF. Sometimes opening a copy on a different volume would produce the missing window, sometimes using an earlier version did the trick. |

Unless the application is scriptable, you will not be able to access its windows via AppleScript. I don't think that XPostFacto is scriptable (yet), is it? The window menu is also application-specific. The Finder has one but XPostFacto doesn't (nor does it really need one since there is only one window. |

Have you fone to the window menu? I think this is in the finder but it should show windows of other applicaions. If it is off the screen you can write an applescript to fix it. It will tell you how in the help. This is a real pain, and should not have to be done. |

I still think the XPostFacto window is being drawn where you can't see it. I mean, you have the menubar and all its functions, right? You should also be seeing a window, but obviously it's not appearing. To confirm my theory, try typing Cmd-W to see if the program quits when the invisible window is closed. Let's hope that Ryan reads this and see what he has to say. |

Hmmm... I don't get it. I get no window OF ANY KIND when I start XPostFacto. I can see absolutely no way to select my hard drive as the destination or the install CD as the installer. My monitor is set to 1024 x 768... so I don't think that the necessary window is appearing "off screen". I feel like an idiot... but I'm genuinely mystified. |

I think your solution is simpler than that. I think the install method is somewhat non-intuitive. It threw me initially. In the one window that does appear, it offers two commands, one of which is greyed out. The one which is NOT greyed out asks to reboot from what volume, and until you select the OS X install disk, nothing else will be offerred. When you select the OS X install disk as the disk from which to boot, the other command will become available, and become "install to which disk." When you make the initial selection of disk to which to install, and click restart, things will happen. Be advised, that with your setup, which is very similar to mine, if you are installing any version before 10.2, be prepared for your computer to become unbootable from any disk initially, as the G4 evidently throws something off song. The solution is to reinsert the original 604 processor, hit the CUDA reset, let it boot up, quit, put the G4 & Carrier ZIF back (and hit the CUDA again), then it'll work fine. BTW, I think that there is no need to go back to 10.0.3 in order to install 10.2.0. Unless you have installers/updaters I don't know about, you should be able to go directly to 10.2.0 without passing thru the others. |

If you're not getting any kind of control panel window on your screen then something is wrong. I think I recall this happening to me when I changed monitors from a 1024x768 to a little 640x480. In other words, I think the window might be drawn off-screen. I'd first try deleting XPostFacto Prefs and see if that helps it. (And Ryan, does your prog check if its window position is within bounds when launching?) |
