I just got the new Darwin 6.02 CD and had been planning on using it on my 7300 (G3/450, 512MB) but read that it isn't supported except NewWorld. 1. What do I need to do, just use XPF 2.2.4 and select to boot? 2. After installing, I'm at command line prompt. now what?? 3. How to select booting from a different partition, one with OS X or OS 9, so it won't keep rebooting into Darwin. I wanted to see if this would be faster, more like OS X but without Aqua/Quartz, more like Linux, but it looks like I have to do a LOT of work in vi or something to get paths, startup routines, a lot of housework, set up and choose shell etc. Online tutorial and FAQs? book? |

Beyond Apple's OS X, I do not think any one has assemble a desktop package for Darwin. To turn Dawin into a ready to use GUI desktop would require a lot of searching to find installable packages. My looking has never truned up anything like a Yellowdog or SuSE distribution based on Darwin. The X window system is available for Darwin. OpenOffice is also available for Darwin. There are many other packages available as well, but you will just need to scour the sites. bill |

I have been all over and Apple doesn't have anything useful, really. There use to be a nice public viewable list for users and developers. It's nothing like Linux. It doesn't have a setup assistant or walk you through. Everything requires a lot of typing and config files, built it up from ground ZERO. the whole install was 840MB and doesn't include even a web browser. You can do mail from the command line of course. Real disappointment. I guess they want you to download everything from the net. SuSe 6.3 came with 4-6 CDs to get you started with 2000 programs. www.darwininfo.org has FAQ, how to add a user, and it is all command line. Even FreeBSD, NetBSD, using VPC 4.0 but from CDs was better than this. Maybe XFree96, Fink, etc once KDE 3.0 is stable. YDL 2.3 is okay but they pale compared to OS X in many ways. |
