circle-slash when booting after 10.2 combo update |

So, I installed Mac OS X 10.2 on my SuperMac J700 (upgraded with Sonnet 400 MHz G32), and it worked great, started up just fine, etc etc. Then I ran software update, and there was a plethora of updates available, including the MacOS X combo update to take the system from 10.2 to 10.2.2. So I told the software updater to download and install all of the updates. While it was downloading, I also ran the L2CacheConfig tool, and loaded the config file it had previously created in MacOS 9. I saved the config, and then after the Software Updater was finished, I allowed it to restart. Now is where the problem occurs. My system boots up into the grey apple on grey background screen, and the little progress wheel starts whirring around... it does this for a few minutes. Then, the Apple turns into a big circle with a slash through it. And it just sits there, with the progress circle continuing to whirl... and doesn't go any further. Any suggestions on how to recover from this situation? Thanks. |

Well, another little update. It seems that it's fairly random, and I think it stems from the same issue I've had on this machine for a while, albeit manifesting itself in a different form. My second internal SCSI hard drive, which holds mac os x, has a habit of timing out before the boot process can complete. So it is pretty random whether a bootup will be successful or not. Sometimes I get lucky, and it works right when I turn it on. Other times, I have to reset the machine a few times before the MESH bus will 'take' the drive. I guess eventually I could try getting a new drive for it, but the system is up and running now, so I won't mess with it too much. MacOS X is working great, though! :-) |

I am from the old school of not doing anything to the computer during software installs. If you JUST installed 10.2 you might try re-installing 10.2 2 and see if your problem goes away, but i would wait for someone else to chime in with there thoughts on doing this. |

A little more info: I booted into verbose mode, and the boot process gets to the point where it is waiting for the root device. It shows these messages: --------- getDependencyListForKmod(): Dependency com.apple.kernel of oldworld.support.PatchedSCSIDeviceType05 is not compatible or is unavailable. load_kernel_extension(): Can't get dependencies for kernel extension "oldworld.support.PatchedSCSIDeviceType05". IOCatalogue: oldworld.support.PatchedSCSIDeviceType05 cannot be loaded. Still waiting for root device Still waiting for root device ---------- and thus it continues ad infinitum... |
