old world sound control? |

I've been perusing the posts here and I find a wide variety of sound problems, but no one has described mine so I wonder if my situation is unique? (I had thought it was just an OSX bug w.r.t. old-world, but maybe not). This is a PowerTower Pro with G4/800 Sonnet card (same problem with PowerLogix G3/500 BTW). My sound is always at maximum, and the mute control does not work. The -visual- indicators (sound level, mute) work but the actual volume is always maximum. I note that in programs which have their own sound control, I can lower the volume (Quicktime, EyeTV), but I have to lower their control really really low to get the actual volume to drop. In programs that have no independent sound control though (e.g. Eudora), I have to rely on the system sound control (always max). Is this a general problem for these XpostFacto-ized boxes, or do I have a peculiar issue? Can sound by any chance be controlled through the terminal (that is, perhaps there is a CLI utility on board to control sound)? |

Yes, this is a known problem--it is something I mean to try to figure out, but it's never gotten to the top of my list of things to do yet. What I do is connect external speakers and control the volume from there. The "mute" checkbox does seem to work for me--it mutes the internal speaker, but leaves the external speakers working (which is what I want). |

It seems that the old world sound driver does not control sound volume correctly. The question is, does anyone have working hardware sound volume control? Note that alert volume (and QuickTime, EyeTV) is done in software. I have a PowerMac 8600 which uses the AppleOWScreamerAudio.kext which is one of the plugins in AppleOnboardAudio.kext. The bug or omission probably lies in there somewhere. There is an AppleScreamerAudio.kext plugin for newer sound hardware which is similar to the OW version. Source code for all three exists in Darwin. Does anyone remember the fact that there used to be two different volume controls in earlier system software (System 7.6 for example)? One was for the built-in speaker and the other was for built-in headphones. This is something that probably should be taken into account when considering a fix. |

G4 or not I haven't ever been able to control the system volume on an OSX enabled oldworld computer. You can adjust the alert volume and adjust the speakers if you have them attached. You can also simply disconnet the internal speaker. |

Ditto. I have a 7300 w/ the G4/800 Sonnet card with the exact same symptoms you have described. |
