XPF 2.2.4 Video, Network, and SCSI Preformance |

Greetings to all. I have once again wiped my Macintosh clean for OS X again. I am using XPF 2.2.4, with a custom NVRam file for my Macintosh. Here is my mac as is. Powerbase 200 LP (Low Profile) PowerPC 200mhz 603e 80mb RAM 13gb Samsung 5400rpm drive, Internal IDE NEC 8x SCSI CDRom (ID:3) Internal SMC1211TX PCI Networking card (<- I think) Entegra 2 Port USB PCI Card ADB Keyboard and USB MS/Intellemouse Onboard Crystal Chipset Sound ATI Rage 3D/II+ 2mb Onboard (works just fine @ 1024x768 and above at thousands of colors, only 1024x768 max at millions, can be brought up to 4mb if needed). Now. Here are my problems. OS X installed just fine. Knowing 10.0.4, it was a misrable excuse for a OS. So I updated the system to 10.1, A-OK and actually, just as fast as OS 9 was (maybe a bit slower, but completly usable). 10.1 loads in 2 minutes from OpenBoot to actual desktop.. For the linux lovers out there- I would say OS X is just as fast as Mandrake 9.0 w/KDE 3.0 on a PC machine of 200mhz and 80mb RAM. No problems yet. Sleep works just fine- machine sleeps, and wakes just great. Sound works, however, the Global Set as seen in the finder bar (the lil' speaker) has NO effect on the sound, I think this is a known bug (would be nice to see fixed!!). iTunes or Quicktime can change the sound just fine and normally. SCSI- No worky. I don't know why, but I suspect 10.0.4 as the first installation had something to do with it- as if I try 10.1 upgrade on a blank hard drive (despite the greyed HD from the fact of no 10.0), SCSI works AND BOOTS from the CDRom Drive just fine. So. Aside from the CDRom and Sound problems, everything is okay. Here are my major problems/questions. My networking card had a extension for OS 9, and works just fine. However, it appears as if OS X doesn't "detect" the network card- nothing shows up in the Network panel except for Modem and Printer ports. If I click ADD under one of the panels, yet again, the network card is not there.. Is there any way to get this card working so I can acsess the internet? Any drivers or something I need? Now. My Graphics Card is fairly powerful- its a ATI Rage Onboard 3D/II+, it IS a 3D card and can handle Quake II or Starcraft, etc, at full screen with a great FPS rating. Most of OS X is smooth- menu fading, text fading, icon dragging, progess bars and other animations. But larger scale effects such as the Genie Effect, Scale Effect, Resizing windows, dragging windows, has maybe 2-3fps a second (jerky, but still usable). I have seen no "artifacts" or problems, and I can use up to 1024x768 Res and above without any problems. No drivers or additional software, 10.0 and 10.1 work just fine and run the installers @ 800x600 (no button-off-screen problems). Are the effects above related to the CPU- or the graphics card itself? Do I NEED a new video card for smooth preformance, or is it all from the 603e processor and all its glory? I'd buy a Radeon 7000, but all I need is Internet Surfing, TOAST Burning (external LiteOn drive), MP3 Playback and burning. Very few games IF ANY. And I'd like to have smoother effects- not like 400fps or anything, but something that looks more better.. It seems that all "little" animations, regardless of having more or less, get jerky very little, its only the large scale effects that slow down a bit. And finally.. Will OS X work BETTER with a Powerlogix G3 400mhz Processor Card, 160mb RAM (from 80mb)? Will this "help" with the slow video preformance in the large effects- or do I need a video card? Has there been any reported problems with OS X and the Powerlogix processors? Any comments or help on the above subjects would be great! Thanks Keven |

For your NIC card check with the MFR to see if they have OS X drivers. The resizing can be helped by a faster processor. If your upgrading get a G4. Unfortunately the only true way to get the most out of OS X is to have a newer machine. |
