Gang, Now that I have Jaguar running on my 8600, I want to convert my reords (33 rpm) and VHS & 8mm tapes to digital format. Since the 7600 & 8600 have the analog audio inputs/outputs built-in, I'd like to take advantage of these ports rather than go buy a $300 Dazzle converter. Anybody have/seen/know-of s/w for Jaguar that will take advantage of the analog ports on the 7600/8600? (I think I still have my old Strata s/w that came with the 8600, but that ran under 7.5.x.) TIA. --Dwight |

Joe, This is way beyond my capabilities to do something as you suggest. Anybody want to take a cut at what Joe suggested? Although, since PlanB's source code is available for the download, it would seem that would be an easier 1st step. --Dwight |

There is documentation for video digitizer components in "Inside Macintosh: QuickTime Components" and OS X info in Tech Note 2012 "Building QuickTime Components for Mac OS X". There is sample code at "http://developer.apple.com/samplecode/ Sample_Code/QuickTime/Capturing/softvdig.htm" but it doesn't access any hardware. In OS X, you probably need to make a kext that the component can use to access the "planb" hardware. The "planb" video digitizer component (for Nitro/TNT ?) can be found in the Mac OS 9.1 System file resources 'thng', 'vdig', and 'STR ' ID - 20035. The vdig is 68K. That can be disassembled, converted to C, compiled for PPC, and tested in OS 9.1. From there, it shouldn't be too hard to make it work on OS X after you figure out how to access the hardware. The Linux driver code can be used to make sense of the hardware accesses. Hopefully, the component doesn't depend on any other drivers or code. The component has been around at least since System 7.5.3. It changed between then and Mac OS 8.5.1 (maybe it was just recompiled) and has been the same since then except for an info 'STR ' -20036 that is removed in 9.1 and which said "This component is the Power Macintoshâ„¢ 8500/8200 Video Digitizer." The component only loads when a monitor is connected to the built-in monitor connector. Hopefully, that restriction can be removed. Also, we need to make sure that it's possible to record more than 2GB of video. That might depend on the application and not the component but I don't know. |

It would really help if Apple did what Microsoft did and provide fully functional sample drivers for every class of device. People won't program drivers for an OS if they don't have something official to go by. Notice the lack of vid cap and soundcard drivers for OS X. People don't want to write a driver that will break with the next OS update or not work 100% with the apps. they should work with. A sample driver from Apple would show a programmer what they require for a PCI vidcap driver and how the Quicktime capture interface should be setup. |

Nope. However, he said he wouldn't stand in the way of anybody using his code to make a Mac OS X version. Unfortunately, I'm not qualified to do the job. Anybody want to try? --Dwight |

Thanks. I emailed the author. Hopefully, I hear soon if he's going port them to 10.2. |

Apple never bothered to write drivers for those ports, even though they are also on the officially supported beige G3. The video capture chipset was dubbed "PlanB" by Apple. Someone did write PlanB drivers for LinuxPPC. Perhaps someone here could port them to OS X. http://mcp.cpu.lu/~mlan/planb.html |
