Hello Mr. OSXGuru! I really could use your help right now:-) I have been trying to install OS 10.1 on my PowerMac 9600. Every time I get the message that says: Claimed failed can't OPEN: scsi/@1:6 This message repeats itself over nearly a dozen times. I am using an external apple scsi drive to boot from. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you. Naroto |

The no mouse movement is happening with the Unsupported UtilityX 1.1 installed??? It is vary strange as I had installed 10.1 at a freinds computer with a newer utility of XPF. Not the last one but the one there was 6 months ago. Can you boot in verbose mode?? apple-b during restart??? When the system is startinh you should see somthes that starts with USBF that is your USB card, and also an ADB pressent message. If you see these too then the computer found your periferals. I personally think that the old version (Unsupported UtilityX 1.1) you are running is the problem. Try an other newer version (not the last one but newer) in case it works |

Well after zapping the pram I get the same results:-( I just cannot understand why I am having such trouble getting my mouse to work so I can install MacOS 10.1. The ADB and USB mouse neither work once the system is booted from the 10.1 disk. I have tried apple restore to place 10.1 on a scsi partition in hope of fixing this issue but the same thing happens. Amazingly everything works in MacOS 10.0 from all three monitors connected at once, zip and jazz drives, external apple scsi drive, usb dvd drive. Any tips please? Unsupported UtilityX 1.1 has still been the only working one. |

Try zapping you pram. I think that this could help you. Press command-option- P-R during boot, until you hear the boot sound twice. In case you want something easyer try techtool lite. It can zap your pram and also restore your manufacture date. |

Ok now that I have tested the ram it returnsas being fine. When it comes to installing Mac OS 10.1 it boots from the cd but afterwards I cannot use the mouse or the keyboard to access what is on the screen. I have tried with only the mouse connected to the computer and the same results:-( When booting from the MacOS 10.0 disk everything works fine and I have three monitors and usb gear that all shows up fine along with a iomega jazz and zip drive. Is there a work around to get Mac 10.1 installed on my system? Thanks Naroto |

The "claim failed" error has something to do with memory, but I'm not sure precisely what is likely to cause it. The "can't OPEN" message sometimes relates to the utility used to format the drive. Sometimes reformatting with Apple's Drive Setup or Intech's Hard Disk SpeedTools helps with that. The "no keyboard or mouse" issue happened with certain developer versions of 10.2, but I can't remember any problems along those lines with 10.1. |

Thanks for your responses. When I try to boot up using the 10.1 disk I cannot use the keyboard or the mouse. This is what prevents the installation:-( How do I get around this? Thanks! |

I just posted a new post about this issue. Try to use an older XPF. |

I think the driver for the internal SCSI controller behaves better than the driver for the external SCSI controller but that is not an option for you if you don't have a bootable internal SCSI CD-ROM drive. |

How long do you wait before giving up? I get this same error when I start my machine cold, i.e. the drive hasn't spun up yet, and "can't be found." It finds itself eventually and gets going. Either that or something is preventing your system from seeing the external drive. |
