Cannot install OS X on 7600 with ATTO UL2D SCSI |

I have a powermac 7600 with a Sonnet/Encore PCI 450/1mb cpu card, and Atto UL2D LVD SCSI PCI Adapter and 2 IBM 10k 18.2GB Ultra 160 SCSI HDDs. There are no other cards installed. Using built in Video w/4mb and HP 9200I 8X CDRW drive on internal SCSI port. No matter what I do I cannot get OS X (10.1.4) to install on the SCSI drives attached to the ATTO card. I can get 9.1 installed but with both the Sonnet X Upgrade software and XPostFactO software I get either a broken folder icon or a long pause on a black screen after rebooting and the machine boots back into 9.1. I have tried moving the CDRW to the 'Slow' 5mb/s port. I have copied the Entire CD to a third HDD on the Built-in Slow SCSI port and specified that as the install from drive. I have throttles XPostFacto to 1. I also tried installing OS X to a slower drive on the internal SCSI port and then copying the contents to one of the faster cards, but that didn't work either. I have CUDA'd and Zapped PRAM as well... I also made sure the root partition of each drive is 8gb (7.5 actually) and have verified that there is proper termination and no ID conflicts... The other major problem is that I cannot format the Drives with anything but the ATTO tool. Drive Setup or Micronet Drive utility immediately crash and force a reboot. Thanks for any help you can give. Joe P. |

I own a PowerMac 9500 G3-upgraded and was able to install MacOS 10.1 using XPF 2.2.5 on an IBM UltraSCSI HD connected to an ATTO UL2D running firmware 1.5. Have not tried 10.2 yet. Another thing, you MUST be able to format your hard drive with OS9 disk utility nor you won't be able to install OSX on it. |

I've had a similar problem; where was it that ATTO firmware v 1.44 was available? Thanks, Dick |

geo4u911: Just FYI, I had trouble with an oem apple internal CD (wouldn't support the required reboot before the install), so I had to install from an external Yamaha scsi 6416S. |

I dought that the cdrw you are using is apple oem. you need a oem cdrom to do a cd os install. you also may need to use the fast scsi bus for your hard drive. the processor upgrade should be no problem but everything else must be as original as possible. |

It has been posted elsewhere that any firmware above 1.5 is NOT compatible with legacy Macs (originally pre-G3). I can testify that xPostFacto 2.2.5b2 can correctly select a drive on the ATTO card on a 7500/G4. From the other posts, it seems that b3 and later are still being debugged, though b2 might not work with the Radeon 7000 and Sonnet Trio combo. But I did my X-install before b2 was available, so I cloned X (carbon copy cloner) from a 50-pin boot drive attached to the motherboard scsi. So I can't say for sure that b2 would give you a successful install from CD. |

Try "updating" the firmware to version 1.44. My ATTO is using firmware version 1.43f which is an Apple version of ATTO's 1.44. Good luck. --Dwight |

It's version 1.6.4, but drive setup won't even start up it crashes during load even if I delete all partitions on the HDD. maybe HDSetup has a max size it can handle? Maybe 18.2gb is too big for what I use which is 7.3.5(Patched)? I will try the new version tonight. Thanks, Joe PS Neither Sonnettech nor ATTO claim compatibility with the UL2 series cards only the UL3,,, |

Joe, make sure your using XPF 2.25b (b3 is the latest). That 8GB limit is for Beige G3 ATA Macs. Noting that you can't format the drives with OS 9's Drive Setup is a concern. I have the ATTO UL2D with 2 Atlas 18GB drives on it and both were formated with Apple's Drive Setup utility. Recommend you retry to format one of the drives with Drive Setup using the low level format option. What is the ATTO's firmware version? --Dwight |
