EyeTV? Not really usable |

I've tried ElGato's EyeTV (with siftware 1.0.4 and 1.0.5) on a PowerTowerPro with Sonnet G4/800 upgrade and OrangeMicro USBcard. Works but is VERY choppy (= unusable). Could be because of the small RAM bandwidth? (I dunno) Anyone else tried this? |

Greetings, I found the right combo that worked for me. God it really is a cpu hog...the delay while typeing (:. OrangeMicro USB2 card, and a belkin powered hub...Its been quite an adventure getting there. Thought I had killed my 9600 yesterday, I fixed by unpluging, pulling battery and all pci cards to get it going again. but now all working....except...oh, i will start another topic Thanks Eddy |

Any possibility that the EyeTV is bad? Is there any USB Mac anywhere that you might try? I bet your local Apple store (if you even have one local?) would let you plug it into a machine there and try. |

In my PTP/SonnetG4/800 I have the Orange Micro dual USB dual Firewire card. Have had no problems at all with USB devices and OSX. I also have the iogear 4-port microhub, which is a power-able hub but I have been way too lazy to even plug it in since I've had no issues. I have a logitech USB mouse, a Lexmark E312 USB printer, and the EyeTV, all hooked up. No connectivity problems, so El Gato's comment is unofficially bogus. Although I've never had to play musical slots with the USB card, I have been forced to play it with Linux on this same box, so somewhere deep down there is some reason to suspect that card order might have something to do with it. If from a terminal windows you type "dmesg" is there any output suggesting errors with any USB-related things? |

Hi, Thanks for the reply. I have a 9600/300 upgraded with a sonnet 800. I supose I could play musical slots with the two cards I tried, but all six of my pci slots are in use. I could pull the original video card, but I need that to install X with xpf. I did try a powered belkin usb hub, but it would freeze 10.2.3. That is the only freeze I have gotten on OS X besides the ipod doing it with fire wire on the same card......hmmmm Well regardles of that card, I bought a new belkin usb only card that wont work either. I have the Macally FW/USB combo card and a generic PC Opti based USB card... Both seem to work perfectly with eyeTV. Maybe it has something to do with which slot you USB card is in? Also some USB cards require an extra power connecter. Make sure if yours needs it it's connected. EyeTV pulls power over USB, so that might be an issue... I could try it in my 9600 also.... Which 9600 do you have with what CPU? |

Hi, I have been unable to run eye tv on my 9600. El gato tells me it is because I do not have built in usb. I have tried it on two different pci cards and a powered hub. Is anybody getting this to work with a pci usb card? If so what brand? Thanks Eddy |

I have a turboTV also, Kind of pathetic that under OS8.6 I had such a better TV setup, which now is useless... Ah well, the cost of progress. I notices recently that Mike Breeden's incomprable xlr8yourmac.com had several reports regarding new PCI TV tuner software and hardware... Marty |

I have a Radeon 7000 in this box with the EyeTV. I don't ever watch in full screen anyway so I get to avoid that little punishment. I've been meaning to renice EyeTV to see if I can get it to work with other apps a little better whiel it's on, but I'm not holding out much hope there. I also have an ixMicro -TV- card in this box as well; wish there was a way for me to get that working in OSX... |

It definitely is a cpu hog. It really makes the computer painful to use if you plan on doing anything else while it's recording... Even reading mail is a struggle. I noticed also that the ixMicro twin turbo card really can not display the TV at full screen resolution and keep up, I used to have the original Radeon PCI in this box, and that was much faster... Well, oddly it seems to work much better today. Maybe a shutdown and reboot fixed it. But now, all my other apps are waaaay choppy and slow while EyeTV is on. I can't seem to win with it. Right now EyeTV is taking about 45-50% of the CPU, and Mozilla is the only other app open. I can type about 1 letter every 2 sec in Mozilla writing this message. Do you see this result also? |

Strangely I have the eyeTV in a Powertowerpro with a Metabox G3/500 card and it works fine... Changing channels is slow, but it is watchable and my roommate uses it to record basketball games while he's at work. 512M of ram 10.2.2 ixMicro twin turbo 128. Acard 66 to Maxtor 60 gig... Marty |
