System is 7600/Sonnet G4-800/Adaptec 29160N w/ Atlas 10k LVD 160/ 384mb/FW-USB PCI card and Radeon 7000. I tried for nearly 2 weeks to install using XPF (all recent versions) on an otherwise strippped system., but my constant problem was on restart...my apple rom cd (tried 2) wouldn't boot the X install CD. I thought that it may be the Sonnet card since everything else was eliminated as the problem. In order to return it, I knew I'd need to try Sonnet's software, and it worked the FIRST time I tried it. My only disappointment is the Radeon 7000 card....seems a real dog scrolling. I've enabled and disabled shadows (Shadowkiller) and quartz extreme (PCI Extreme!). Graphic acceleration is enabled in it's software. Anyone have any ideas? Larry |

My Power Tower Pro 225/Sonnet G4 800/Sonnet Tempo ATA/100 w/WD 80GB SE, IBM 120GB 120GXP, Pioneer DVR-104/1GB RAM/Macsense 10/100 ethernet/Ratoc Firewire-USB2.0/Radeon Mac Edition gets similar Xbench results. I'm just holding out for the IBM PPC970 before I buy a new machine, and with the performance I'm getting out of it I'm going to be able to do that as it looks right now. I'm running Photoshop 7, Final Cut Pro 3, DVD Studio Pro, and iDVD as well as the other iApps without a hiccup. Games run great too. For instance, RtCW runs at full speed with nary a slowdown, as do ST Voyager: Elite Force, Alice, and Aliens vs Predator. The only problematic game is Myth III, which even new Macs have trouble with. I just got MoH at Macworld last week and it plays pretty well too. It does slow down in large outdoor environments but not unacceptably. I think I can tweak the settings to fix that. Everything runs at 1024x768 which is very pleasing to my eye. I think the key components for my good graphics performance are the G4 800, lots of RAM, and the original Radeon Mac Edition card. It wipes the floor with the Radeon 7000 in terms of 3D performance. I'm very excited to be able to run iDVD, which I owe to the Sonnet Tempo card. I've burned 4 perfect DVD's so far. These were archived episodes of TV shows that I copied from my Tivo. I've got a few projects that I've suspended work on because I'm waiting to buy the iLife package but the very fact that I can still do all of this stuff is really a testament to the engineering that went into our old Macs and Clones. |

It's interesting that your benchmarks actually show the 7600 being faster at OpenGL... So I guess you shouldn't complain too much about your radeon 7000. I have the Radeon PCI (original) and it's Ok, but not overly lively... It would be great if someone made a NEW PCI video card with mac support like a Radeon 8500 or Geforce 4mx or something... Gabby, For me and my PM7300 that I got for nothing ...it was worth it. I like the speed of the machine with the G4-800 in it. I also picked up a e-bay 7300 that I'll be doing a G4-400 swap with. I am trying to build up a second system for my Daughter to use and network with. Chris |

Gabby, The Sonnet 800 w/ my setup is really dependable and quick...I'm comparing it to my TiBook 800. Whether it's worth it is relative. Building up my 7600 is a challenge/project for me as I won't be using it much and I had the $ to burn. $400 can get you a pretty good start on purchasing a new mac w/o the bottleneck of the slower system busses, ram, etc. on these legacies. What do you think about the Sonnet 800Mhz G4 PCI card? Is it worth it? Gabby |

It is set to thousands, 1024x768 100 mz. Any other ideas? I'm using the drivers from the 10.2.3 update..only ones that seemed to work. BTW...I ran Xbench as a comparison between my TiBook DVI 800/1gb/ 5400 rpm 60gb HD (the 7600 is in parenthesis): CPU 89.67 (74.39) Memory 107.31 (41.69) Quartz Graphics 104.71 (40.67) OpenGL 87.25 (95.62) User Interface 93.84 (37.87) Disk 57.11 (65.37) Larry |
