Greetings to all. Aye. Twas a merry christmas indeed. I finally got my Powerlogix G3 400mhz Upgrade Processor. It is currently running at a 45mhz Bus Speed (50mhz was very slightly unstable), therefor at 360mhz. (8:1, 10:1 at 40mhz bus is slightly skippy with graphics...). OS X 10.1.5 runs absolutly perfectly. I also have 144mb RAM, soon to be 160mb as soon as I get my issue solved with OWC sending me the doulbe-sided RAM. Anyhow. Does anyone know if Jaguar is a "worth it" upgrade? I mean, on a system like this, will Jaggy make a huge difference? What about using a PCI Mac Edition Radeon (32mb), and Quartz Extreme? Would that make a huge impact- or would the PCI idea kill the "speed" of QE? |

I'm pretty fond of Jaguar myself--it does make a noticeable speed improvement, and of course some interesting new apps require it. The Radeon is great in specific contexts--it certainly make the screensavers much more interesting, and iTunes visualizations, etc. But for ordinary scrolling in web browsers etc., I have not found that it makes a huge difference--it probably is faster, but I don't notice it especially much. I haven't experimented with Quartz Extreme using PCI. From reports I have seen, it helps for some kinds of operations, and hurts for others. So you need to experiment and see whether it is useful for what you do. |
