FireWire Booting on a B/W G3... |

I don't have a B/W G3, but I was wondering if XPF 3.0 will allow for booting a B/W G3 from it's internal FireWire ports, or if it has to be a PCI card. Any heads up on that would be great! |

The problem with XPostFacto on the B/W G3 is that XPostFacto assumes an Old World architecture in a variety of ways, whereas the B/W G3 is a New World machine. This could be worked around--it would just take a little effort on my part. One of these days I really should get a supported machine, just to see what it feels like :-) |

Yes, oddly enough the $20 Firewire cards are working just fine, as is the Tempo Trio's Firewire. I'm hoping to figure out the issue is with the others yet. |

I bet any strategy which allows XPF 3 to give us bootability in our old mac, will also provide this feature to B/W and yikes owners.. With the built in FW ports. And no, those machines didn't have firmware which looked to boot from FW... |

Well, while talking with the geniuses at the store I'm at, we've come to the conclusion that it is not bootable (but not for lack of trying on my part outside of work.) Alas, I just checked the Knowledge Base and it looks like both the B/W G3 as well as the PCI Graphics G4 fail to boot over FW. As I understand it, the motherboard on those two machines were basically identical, except for the different processor daughtercard. Here's the article: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58606 I'm not sure what the difference is between that motherboard and the newer ones in G4s, but I'm guessing that it would be a combination of both the controller and firmware, and maybe when things get recognized in the boot process. I'd be curious to see, though, if using XPostFacto 3 on a "compatible" PCI 1394 card, one could boot using the PCI card on one of those two machines, or even find a way to enable booting on the built-in ports as well. (On a side note, are the 1394 cards that OWC sells for $20 or so considered to be "supported" cards from the tests you've done? That is the one I have in my 9500, and it would be totally awesome if I could boot from it.) |

Does it not work now? I had thought that machines with built-in Firewire could boot from Firewire in Mac OS X. |
