Odd Video Card Spec Screen Upon X Boot Attempt |

My current rig is a Umax S900 with a 800mhz Sonnet G4, a Tempo 133 in the top PCI slot, a Radeon in the second, and a Tango USB/Firewire combo in the slot below those two. I have 144mb of RAM, not a lot, but enough 'till more arrives. Anyhow, this is the issue: -When I boot into X, whether trying to install X from XPostFacto or trying to boot into a partition containing X & the XPostFacto extensions, I get the grey apple splash screen, followed by a black screen with my video card's specs in the upper-left corner, text in white, with the exception of the word "color" which is in alternating colors. Nothing else occurs past this; no continued boot, nothing. As I said, I have one partition, in the first 8Gb of my 60Gb IDE drive, with X already installed. I actually used a friend's iMac to install it, after which, I used XPostFacto to install the special extensions. I have, however, tried to use XPostFacto to install OX onto the partition. In either case, all I get is this strange black screen with my video card's specs. What causes this? How can I be rid of it and into OS X? Thanx. -Antonio |

ironhawk, seems like your computer booted into verbose mode and then froze. You may have to boot into OS 9 and then run something like Norton's or DiskWarrior on your Jaguar partition. You may have an error in your directory or the volume bitmap. Happens to me when I get a crash or freeze. |

ironhawk, I have a J700, and I've seen all of the problems that you have described. Like powderhaus, I got past the first hurdle by moving my video card to slot A. I have a Tempo Trio card, and it's in slot B. I don't have any other PCI cards. If your Tempo card isn't in slot B, try that. Also try running XPF with no options, but with autoboot checked. The author of XPF told me that sometimes the extra NVRAM that's used by XPF's own settings can cause an overrun. Let me know how you're doing. Ken |

OK. I changed slots, but, now, I just get the grey apple splash screen. I let it sit for thirty minutes or so, then rebooted into OS 9. this is getting a bit frustrating. -Antonio |

Thanks. It does make sense, if you think about the hardware configuration of the PCI G4s. The first slot is allocated to the video card. As for the Tango, it will have to stay put, as the Tempo 133 has to be on the Apple controller as a requirement. Thanks for the update. -Antonio |

Your video card is in the wrong slot. for some reason it is picky about where the video card is. you have to put it in the top slot i believe, i have a J700 but they are the same motherboard but yours is a tower (and yours has a few extras) and you MAY have trouble with the 3rd PCI card, some cards don't like to be on a none apple PCI bus and your Tango is on it but i am not sure ow it will like it. and come to think of it you may try pulling that card first (or moving it to the top 2 slots). I have forgotten what caused the hang at the COLOR screen, it may have been the video card not being in the top slot or it may have been the extra card in the wrong slot so give them both a try. Sorry if this is a little confusing but i will try to clear it up if you can't get it. |
