Boot up screen behind bars |

I've had an annoying problem with my boot up screen ever since I first got OS X going on my S900 with XPF. It persisted when I installed Jaguar. When I first boot up and when I boot with command-S in order to run fsck, the screen is divided by alternating light and dark vertical bands. The characters of messages and prompts, as well as the echo of anything I type in, appear in every other band. S| |o| |r| |t| | | |o| |f| | | |l| |i| |k| |e| | | |t| |h| |i| |s| |. I can manage to decipher messages and follow what I type in, but it is disconcerting; and sometimes I think I miss important information. Has anyone else encountered a similar problem. I am using the original Twin Turbo 8MB graphics card that came with the S900 and have XPF "output" set to the card. Any suggestions for getting a more readable boot up screen? |

I booted into OS X today on my S900 and noticed a line mentioning the resolution at 832 x 624. I am wondering if my every-other-band character spacing might be related to a resolution setting in NVRAM. Is there a way to set the resolution there to what it becomes after full boot: 1024 x 768? |

I had installed X once at a 9600 with the Apple's TT card installed. (I do not know if it had 8 MB) As I think that were no problems with it. I could see all the initial texts correctly. |

No, I don't like the suggestion I get a new video card. The ixMicro has been fine running under OS X, once I get past the initial boot up screen. My questions - again - are: has anyone else experienced this vertical barring? does anyone have a suggestion (preferably, other than "new video card") for correcting it? If the suggestion is "new video card", can anyone substantiate that the problem is the ixMicro and that a different card corrects the problem? Put another way: has someone who *is* using an ixMicro with OS X experienced this same problem? Thanks for any shared experiences. |

I have a suggestion for a more readable screen, but you won't like it. Get a new video card. ixMicros are like, total arse biscuits when it comes to OS X. Usually though I don't see that problem unless it's off the old macs' built in video, which uses 70ns DRAM. Either way, a cheap Rage 128 will fit the bill and work wonders for your 3D too :) Or go find a good Radeon PCI (R7200, not the crappy 7000). That'll be even nicer. - Chibi Delennâ„¢ |
