Hi All, I have a G4/450 upgrade card I am trying on my dad's PM 8500. I'm having a heck of a time getting the computer to boot properly with it to install OS X. I have read all the threads about ram being a big problem and termintation problems. I seem to being having vido problems though. I have all the ram chips out except for one and am trying to move the vram chips around to get it to boot properly. With just one vram in slot one, the computer screen comes alive 1 out of for times. I can hear the drives turning and can tell that the computer is going through the bootup process. If the screen comes up good, I'll reboot and get a black screen. Nothing is working properly. Any help and suggestions would be great so that I can OS X working again. Thanks in advanced. Also, I have never gotten the screen to come alive with both VRAM 1 Slots filled. I am wandering if a video card will help bypass the use of the vram chips. Jack |

I hope there is no big difference between XLR8/G4-450 and XLR8/G4-400.... I run a PM 9500 and recently upgraded from XLR8/G3-400 to XLR8/G4-400. The G3 card worked perfectly from day 1 - the installation of the G4 was cruel - but ihave it running perfectly and very fast since 2 weeks now. Here a my suggestions: 1. Make it run in OS 9.1 Step 1: Reset your PM completly - CUDO and PR/RAM with your Original 8500card (maybe even remove the battery for some time) Remove all you add-cards like USB, Firewire, Soundcard etc., ATI7000!!!) 2. Install a clean OS 9.1 (only in OS9.1 Level2config works - you´ll need it later!) 3. Install XLR8-2.6.1 Controlpanel (still with your old 8500) 4. Restart and serialize it. 5. Take a look at the 2.6.1 to see that all RAM you have is interleaved 6. Take a towel and dry your hands...we are now ready to put in the XLR8/G4 card and press the CUDO again. 7. DO NOT RESET THE PRAM!!! In my eyes at least with my machine it gave me a black screen with no more booting.... (I guess it has something to do with the speculative processing wich is not available on <9600(8600) PM´s 8. I hope this works - I put in all my add/cards one after the other and all works fine now. PS: Gary Daily really helped me a lot - I bought my G4/400 through ebay. PS: PM 9500, OS9.22, OS X 10.2.3, 896MB Ram, ATI 7000Mac, Adaptec 29160N, |

I decided to give up on it for a couple of days because I'll be out and put all the memory back along with the vram and G4 upgrade and booted up the computer to see what would would happen. To my suprise OS X booted and the monitor worked normal for about 2 minutes. I lost the monitor, but could hear the disk drive doing its thing. I shut it down and tried again, no go. I'll try all your suggestions when I get back from my trip. Thanks. Jack |

my memory is you need at least 2 vram simms installed in interleaved sockets (ie not next to each other), in order to get the built in to work right. Marty |

flynjmac-- I had some similar difficulties with an xlr8 g4/350, and I went to Daystar Technology who is actively marketing and supporting xlr8's products. I think their url is www. daystartech.com. Gary Dailey is the man I worked with at Daystar--he knows his stuff. Daystar is active on eBay (trysearching apple macintosh--xlr8). You'll eventually get to their website. My two cents--Mark |

A couple more suggestions First put the old processor card back in after clearing the CUDA and make sure you have video in the original configuration then remove the original card then make sure you clear the CUDA again possibly even taking out the battery for a few hours then insert the G4 and make double sure that the Processor Daughter card is completely seated. hopefully you will then have some life. |

I've tried the vram in pairs in slot one and the monitor still doesn't come alive. I can hear disk activity so I definitely know that memory is good and the upgrade card is somewhat working. I'm wondering if anywhen esle has had problems with the G4 upgrades and vram. Thanks. |

The onboard video on the 8500 definately requires VRAM in pairs. Their are 4 slots on the motherboard. Any two banks need to be filled. The banks are, as fixitjc states, every other one. So if the slots are 1,2,3,4 then either 1,3 or 2,4 need to have VRAM in place. I have used the onboard video before to install X , though a video card will help speed up some things. Good Luck |

Sorry the CUDA is up and a little to the LEFT of the CPU slot. a little square block with a small round button in the center. |

The onboard video on the 8500 needs VRAM in pairs I don't remember the sequence but I believe it is every other one. I am running exclusively from the onboard video on an 8500 - XLR8 - 500mhz/g3, 384 meg RAM (3-128 OWC) and 2 meg VRAM. Are you using the onboard SCSI or have you added ATA. I am using 3 - 9gig SCSI drives 2 on the internal (fast) and one on the external. I am running 10.2.3 from one of the internal drives. Be sure to clear the PRAM/NVRAM using the little CUDA button found just a little above and to the right of the CPU Daughter Card slot hold it down for a while (I count to 30)before you install the CPU Card. DO NOT USE the XLR8 software it does not work with 10.2. I use Ryan's L2 software to activate my L2 Cache .... now you are ready to begin to install 10.2....LOL good luck |

I think the onboard video on the 8500's is a definite show stopper. You will have better success with an ATI Rage 128 card or better, though Rage Pro will work too. |
