Owner "system" group "staff" in permissions!? I don't understand why these settings are as they are when I hit "Get Info" on my startup drive. I'm unable to change the permissions for anyone from read only. I can't share the startup drives contents but need to. My other drive is fine however. running osx10.1.5 on a 7600/Powerlogix G3 350. any help would be greatly appreciated. thank you |

Hi Phil, As long as you have an administrator's password you don't have any problems. Do the following: Start up a Terminal session Go to the directory that you want type: "sudo chmod permissionflags filename" (where permissionflags are what you want who to be able to do, thus, if you want yourself to be able to do everything with a file, the command would be: "sudo chmod u=rwx filename". For further info look at the man page for chmod.) You will then be asked for your administrator's password. After these steps you should have the correct permissions. HTH, Jonck |

Phil-- Have you tried the "Sharing" panel in System Preferences? I don't need anything but the default yet for my own system, but I believe this is where you can assign and modify permissions for various users. Mark |

Ummm I never moved any drives. I installed 10.1.5 on one drive and OS9.2.2 on another and everything was fine yesterday. I've been trying to get Cache Control X to work (another separate problem) but I've done nothing else that I know of. There is no lock button that I can see in the get info windows in 10.1.5 but the pop up windows are greyed out in the privleges tab...owner , group, and everyone. None can be changed. It also says the owner is "server" which is the name of my startup drive and the group is "staff" whatever that means. It's difficult to be impressed so far with xPostFacto. |

I don't think that moving the drive would be the problem because the permissions are stored on the drive with OS X, not somewhere else on the computer. If the computer boots from a different OS X then there might be a problem with the permissions on the moved drive. There is a lock button in the Get Info window. If you have admin access you should be able to click on that, type in your password, and change permissions. I think the owner of the OS X startup drive should be you, and the group should be admin. |

phil, By any chance, did you install OS 10 by connecting your drive to another computer and then moving the drive back to your own machine? Your files may have inherited permissions of the other machine. Or if your machine is on a network, it's possible that someone who had access to your drive might have changed the permissions. I'm not a real expert on this, but I hope this might point you toward the cause of your problem. Ken |
