Sound output problem in System X? |

If IÕm running 10.2.3 with XPF on my 7300 with Sonnet G4 800, Quicktime has a problem with the sound volume of a Div-X-Movie and of some MPEG4 video streams: The volume is so low, that you can hardly understand anything without an insane amplification. IÕve updated Quicktime to the latest version - no change. The sound output of other formats is OK. If IÕm running System 9.1, the sound volume of all formats is OK. Is this one of these compatibility problems of System X on not-supported Systems? Is this a known issue? Is this something for our Guru? Richard |

I get a system chime when I restart the computer, and if I open the Sound panel on System Preferences right away I can make the computer beep a few times. After that, nothing. Heavy disk access doesn't seem to have much to do with it. |

It seems like the most common sound problem mostly affects computers that are using an IDE drive as their main drive. Tis problem is that sound works fine until you do something disk intensive and then sound cuts out. When this happens the only thing that will get sound back is a shut down and restart. This problem also happens with SCSI drives but not nearly as bad. Is this the type of sound problem you have or do you have different symptoms? |

Thanks, kbata. I installed the new (old) driver but there's still no sound on my 8500. I'm out of ideas. |

kbata: Thanks, but when I tried to download the kext package I was navigating through the Contents/MacOS stuff inside the package. I couldn't download only the kext file itself. Can you please 'tar -czvf Audiofix.tgx AppleOnboardAudio.kext' and upload the .tgz file? That way I'll have the whole package. |

http://homepage.mac.com/kbata Don't forget that you need to remove the first part of the text so that it's identical. I didn't follow the directions. I just changed the permissions on the library folder and removed the current version and added the old version and then reset the permissions. Then reboot. When I first opened Itunes the OS said that there was a problem with some files. I just clicked fix for all of them and it worked fine. It didn't seem to have an affect on the problem I have been having occasionally when doing disk intensive operations but it's supposed to work on the low volume problem. |

Who's got a handy version of this driver that we can test? A while ago in this forum someone said they posted it on their .mac site but it was gone when I looked for it the other day. |

It wasn't the USB Driver it was AppleOnboardAudio.kext located in system/library/extensions. The version they said that would help with your problem was from OS X v10.1.3 |

...and neither did USB2EHCI_v2_0 |

kbata: I've tried to go back to the former USB driver, as mentioned by you in the "no sound in 7500" thread. It made no difference either. Sigh.. Richard. |

10.2.4 doesn't help here |

kbata: I've installed 10.2.4, but it makes no difference for the described sound problems, so I'll have to try your other "solution" as soon as I've some time. Thanks. Richard |

I saw this problem on another forum. The solution was to replace the built in audio extension with an older one. I tried this to see if it would solve the sound problem that knock sound out when you do disk intensive activities like launching VPC. It didn't help with that problem but the problem they had listed was low volume. There was speculation that the 10.2.4 update might solve the volume problem. I would try that before messing with the extensions. If you want the link to this "solution" let me know. One problem with this kind of solution is that you would probably need to do redo after software upgrades that update the sound extension. |

Marty: either way. The only difference: the built in speaker cannot be amplified enough to understand the sound properly, while external devices can, but the result is too much noise, of course. R |

Is this from the built in speaker or via the mini jack out? I don't have this problem on my 7500/g3 500... Which is hooked to an external amp via the 1/8" stereo jack. I'll go test it again though. Marty |
