I'm attempting to install X10.1.2 and it stops on reboot with that root device thing.. so it can't see my old 2x cdrom. Ok. But, does this mean i have to pull the drive? I use it, ok it's old but useful. I have a powertowerpro, and also have a yamaha cdburner in it. But i'd like to keep both drives. If i have to pull it, can i put it back in after X loads ok, or does it have to stay out for me to use X? If i cant use it all, does anyone know what the oldest cdrom scsi from apple is that will work? A 4x? etc? (so I can pick up another cheap). I put the old drive in so I'd have an apple bottable cdrom. Still would like one. Also, I have a Voodoo3 2000 video card in the tower, and am unsure whether this is going to cause problems after i figure the cd thing. Anyone know abt this card and X? |

oh, by see the burner do you mean can i install from it? Yes that's what I did, I installed using the burner... but the process stopped when it couldnt load support for my cdrom drive. So do I have to remove the drive, or is there some work around? |

on the video card issue.. what can I use for drivers or do I need them? In 9, the voodoo card crawls minus the driver software... wonder what it'll be like in X? I don't know if the installer will see my burner, bc it stopped at the cdrom drive... Do I need to pull the cdrom? or can I follow your suggestions above and install with it still in there? And it's scsi, so the apple ones stopped at about 24x i think.... but i was thinking cheap as in $10 (not really wanting to pump $$ into the tower, when X is gonna be slow anyway... I have a G3 500 in it, but still a 50mhz bus) |

Will it see the CD burner? if not then you need to make an extra partition on your hard drive that is about as big as a CD (700MB) and so a search for Apple Software Restore. Then drag the OSX cd into it (icon) and tell it to format the new small partition (i find letting it do this seemingly useless task helps) and restore the software (the partition has to be on a bootable drive) then open XPF and use the new partition with OSX installer on it to boot up and install OSX. this worked for me. If you are going to get a CDROM drive, just get a fast one, they are real cheap now... as for the Voodoo3 i THINK it will work but as you probably know it will not have openGL support nor will you be able to use the Quartz extreme hack but other than that you should be fine... |
