Well I finally figured out the cause of my freeze ups during verifying/repairing permissions, scanning my boot drive with Virex or anything else drive intensive for that matter. The cache, either L2 or L3 or possibly both, seems to be the culprit. I disabled the SonnetCache.kext file in my Extensions folder. Upon rebooting, I was able to completely going through the process of repairing permissions and scanning my drive with Virex for the first time since I have had my board. I already sent Sonnet an email with the problem. Hope they get back to me. |

How is this Sonnet g4 800 Mhz card? I am using a Newer tech 400 MHZ G4 card now. Is it worth it to get the Sonnet G4 800 Mhz? |

I just took that processor off your hands. I was looking to buy one for my 8500 to hold me while I save up for a new powerbook (Apple should update the 15in model by then--also I want to wait until the new version of the OS is out too.). I'm going to do some computer surgery to move all those components into a 9500. Then the 8500 with the G3 500 card becomes a test web server. Looking forward to getting the card so I can edit webpages in Dreamweaver without waiting 30 seconds for the text to catch up... Now off to buy a cheap PC radeon card to flash... Terrance |

Gabb, I just put mine on ebay $350 Buy it Now. My sawtooth arrived yesterday and I'm parting ways with my old powertower pro and some of the things I used it with it. I want to thank Ryan Rempel for allowing me to experiment with OS X on my old machine. It allowed me to get accustomed to it and its features before moving on. I want to thank everyone who has helped me out on this forum with any issues I may have come acrossed. In case anyone is interested, I've put up my Ultratek board with a 15 gig drive on ebay as well. I haven't put the PTP up yet. I'm selling it with 704 megs of ram, an ADS USB board, a generic Firewire board, a Twin Turbo graphics board, A GV Teleport Platinum external modem, internal zip with a bunch of zip disks, Apple 12X cd rom internal, 2 drives (one 2 gig, one 4 gig), Apple Extended keyboard. Anyone who might be interested make me an offer. I'll be selling my original Radeon board when my new video board gets here. |

Well worth it! I love the huge jump in speed over a G3 running at 500 mhz in my 8600. If you cannot or do not want to save up enough money for a new machine, this is a great upgrade. Can't wait for the 1 gig upgrade cards. |

I also have a G4800 Sonnet card. Have used Sonnet cache software from almost Day 1 after I figured out to get it from their free X Tuneup. Twoolley is right. Install the OSX Tuneup from Sonnet as per their instructions. In OS 9 then use XPostfacto to reinstall extensions and then you are good to go. In my mind then you have the best combo: stability of XPostfacto and the L2 and L3 enabled for performance in 10.2. Also do not forget the speedup one gets because the Sonnet extension loads very early in the boot process. |

Marcush is right. I also switched to Sonnet X Tuneup with my G4 800. You do need to boot into OS 9 and reinstall XPostFacto Extensions after using X Tuneup, then using XPostFacto reboot back into OS X. At least that's what I remember. When finished you will have the best L2/L3 cache enablers (Sonnet) and the best old world bootX extensions (XPostFacto). |

I also switched to X Tuneup from L2CacheConfig and Cache Control X. I installed OSX with XpostFacto. I switched because neither of the other two cache enablers would enable the L3 and L2 caches of the card. I had to use both at the same time to get the same result. So you definitely do not need to use Sonnet's OSX installer to use X Tuneup. |

Have used it without from day one. The Sonnet PCI installerX is basically equivalent to XPostfacto in that it allows older machines to install & boot X. For those that already have X installed, Sonnet's free cache enabler (X Tune-up) ensures the card is utilized properly (all caches enabled). You are able to launck ASP to confirm this after installing the tune-up. You can also see the extension loading in single-user mode. |

Hmmm. I thought the Sonnet X Tune-up required the $30 Sonnet PCI X Installer program. After reading the Sonnet web site discription, I'm sure what gives with the Tune-up. Can U use the Tune-up without Sonnet's PCI X Installer program? TIA. --Dwight |

Dwight Install Sonnet's X Tune-up and your L3 cache will be enabled right away. The download is free and has worked flawlessly in my 9600 from day one. |

Last weekend, I installed the subject card in my 9600/233. No problems encounterd. Works like a champ with XPF & L2 Cache Config. The card has given new life to my 9600. So, I'm eagerly awaiting Ryan's update to L2CC to handle the L3 cache. --Dwight 9600/233 Sonnet G4/800 512MB RAM 4GB internal 9GB on an ATTO UL2D (min Classic partion & X 10.2.4 particion) USB/Firewire PCI card Twin whatever video card |

No, X Tune-up is not intended only to be used with their OSX installer. The descriptions on the download page state that if you already have X installed then Tune-up is all you need. I also verified that with tech support. That's not your troubel though. From the output of dmesg from the terminal here is are the hex settings of both my L2 and L3 caches. L2CR=0x80000000 L3CR=0x8F020300 You can put the value for the L2 in a text file and from OSX L2CacheConfig will find it. I forget what you have to name the file though. It's been a long time since I used it so I don't remember if you can select the text file. |

I used the Sonnet tuneup as well. But as in my original post in this thread, I was having problems with the Sonnetcache.kext file and the caches. I even had Sonnet send me a new board and still had the problem. So I'm thinking its software related. Besides I think Tuneup is for only if you use the Sonnet X Installer. |

L2cacheconfig will not enable the L3, as far as I know. Why do you want the L2 profile from it? I use Sonnet's Xtuneup, which also makes it visible in Apple's system profiler. Powerlogix works, but system profiler is then confused. I reinstall XPF extensions after applying Sonnet's Xtuneup, just as a precaution. That leaves Sonnet's cache enabler in place. |

Are any of you running L2cacheconfig with this board? I need to get the hexadecimal profile of the L2. I'm running 9.2.2 and have no way of getting it. Can someone list it for me? Thanks |

Mcolley, I just saw on macfixit.com that the problem could have something to do with corrupt preference files. Make sure you repair permissions once you apply the combo update. Then install a few apps at a time and correct permissions again. Also if you have OS 9 on a separate partition, and have either Diskwarrior or Norton 6.0. Run that to examine your jaguar drive/partition. These steps should solve your freezes. |

I installed the 10.2.4 upgrade on top of my Sonnet G4/800 Jaguar 10.2 system and it didn't make it through the process, killing the 10.2 system. I started fresh with a clean install of 10.2, then applied the 10.2.4 upgrade with success (I had to use the Sonnet installer since I haven't had success with XPF). After installing all my programs, I started getting constant freezes and damage to the HD. It made my OS9 system look really stable in comparison! Looks like it time to go back to 10.2 or try 10.2.3.....10.2.4 is way too buggy on my old world set-up. BTW...Sonnet hads always responded to my e-mails, but I find their tech support people not very sharp. One guy responded to my e-mail on USB 2 SW install problems by saying Sonnet did not provide the SW or was it needed, only to have me point out it comes in their package. Overall, my experience has been a denial of sorts on their part as to most of the problems I read about on the WEB. Marshall |

Also in the computer industry in general, we have learned over the years to NOT EXPECT VERY MUCH in the way of support if anything. All I ask is that they take it back and give me my money if it doesn't work. I didn't bother wasting my time with Sonnet when the 800Mhz G4 I bought was bad. I spent a day convincing myself it wouldn't work in any of three boxes, and then I sent back for a refund... In general a fast exchange/refund is the best support we can hope for.... Marty Welcome to the future. it's unsupported. |

Exactly. Of course, I think the tech support is much worse if you actually have to use it... If the product works right out of the box then who really cares if the tech support is bad or good - the product is great! |

I have to agree with john.england. I wouldn't know how bad their tech support is because my card (and other upgrades I've installed on other people's machines) work perfectly right out of the box. On the other hand, I've had nightmares with other brands, such as XLR8... |
