Slow iMovie 3 performance |

Is anyone else having performance issues with iMovie 3? Version 2 was great on my machine - PTP, 800MHz Sonnet, 832MB RAM. V 3 is choppy and almost unusable. I've tried the advice on MacFixit (delete old QT plugins from user/library/internet plugins) with no improvement in performance. I've seen a LOT of negative feedback about the performance of this app, unfortunately. Fortunately I have a copy of iMovie 2 on my other OS X partition and can still use it. |

Looks like we posted the same answer at the same time marcush, but you got the name of the utility right! Oops... |

I don't know of any way to download the iMovie installer, but if you have your OS X install disk it can be extracted from there using Pacifier. |

iMovie 2.1.2 is on the Jaguar CD. It can be extracted with Pacifist. I don't think Apple makes it available as a free download anymore. |

iMovie 3.0.2 exports to tape with only a few frames per second on my 8600/ G4 450 so it is useless. It also occasionally crashes which 2.1.1 never has done. I'm still using Mac OS 10.1.5 but this shouldn't matter. iMovie 2.1.1 on Mac OS 9.1 tends to stutter on export to tape. The old iMovie 1.0.2 exports to tape perfectly so I have exported with 1.0.2 and used 2.1.1 for importing and editing with Mac OS 9.1. iMovie 2.1.1 on Mac OS 10.1.5 seems to export to tape OK although I haven't yet tested this much. AFAIK iMovie 2.1.2 fixes the corrupted thumbnails bug. Can iMovie 2.1.2 installer downloaded somewhere? |

Today Apple released the iMovie 3.0.2 update. I eagerly installed it on my PTP. Sadly, it is still sluggish and choppy. It seems to have done nothing to improve performance on my system... |

iMovie 3 is more screwed up than I thought. I deleted the plist files for iMovie in ~/Library/Preferences and did see an increase in speed. This is a tip I read about on the Apple discussion boards. But...when I tried to capture some video it froze my machine twice. I had to do a hard reboot both times. iMovie 2 and Final Cut Pro 3 exhibit no such problem. |

In exporting to QT from iMovie 3, from a project on one hard disk volume to a .mov file on another hard disk volume, it managed to corrupt both volumes! One of the volumes refused to dismount for Disk Utility (after many OS X reboots), so I had to boot to OS 9 and run Norton 6.x. Still some damage left that Norton couldn't fix (cross-linked files). Also, due to the corruption, the saved .mov is reported by the Finder to only be 268KB, but it is a VIDEO-codec-compressed, high quality 60 minute movie, which must be at least several hundred MB. It plays in QT, but the Finder continues to report an erroneous size. |

As others have already said this isn't limited to OLD World Macs but all Macs. It has been a hot topic at www.macfixit.com Apple is sure to release a new version to take care of problems since everyone is have problems with it. |

I can't remember where I saw the post but on another forum this was a topic on all macs and someone said that he suspected a processor hog. He started "Process viewer" in a window over the movie while it was playing. While the Process viewer window was open over the playing movie, the playback problems disappeared! When the movie was in the foreground, the problem came back. The poster chalked it up to "buggy software that Apple has to fix....". I don't use iMovie so I can't comment on whether or not this is true for me. |

I doubt very much that it will never work well with our machines because the same problems are happening on new Macs as well. It occurred to me that the worst of the performance problems I've seen may have been due to the Ken Burns effect rendering my iPhoto library. During the weekend I reinstalled iMovie 2 to work on a mostly completed project that I put on hold to wait for iMovie 3. Now, while the performance still isn't good it is a little faster. The slight performance improvement might be do to either one or both of these events but I have no way of knowing for sure. |

I'm afraid we're going to have to wait for an update from Apple to address performance issues. Nothing I've done has made any difference at all. Perhaps this app will never work properly with legacy macs. Thankfully we still have iMovie 2, which has none of these issues. Unfortunately it also lacks the new features which made this such a compelling upgrade in the first place. |

That was a dead end as you suspected. I only have the QT 6.1 plugin in /Library/Internet Plug-ins. There was nothing in my /User/Library/Internet Plug-ins folder. The only other thing I can think to do right now is reinstall iMovie but that will have to wait until tomorrow. I'm too tired right now. |

Don't expect too much when you remove the QT plugin. I did find it interesting that in my user/library/internet plugins folder there was version 6.0 of the QT plugin, but my main library had version 6.1. I tried copying the 6.1 into my users library and deleting it from there altogether. Neither approach made a difference. Also, changes I made to a project with iMovie 3 playback smoothly in v.2. The only problem so far is that v.2 doesn't seem to play audio fades created with v.3 properly. |

I was just about to post the same question. I have the same problem. Choppy playback and audio dropouts. I also removed the 3rd party plug-ins I had installed. I forgot about the quicktime plug-ins though. I'll try that when I get home. I also reinstalled the iMovie 2 package to a separate partition. The problem is significant and pretty widespread. I'd expect a response and/or solution from Apple in the not too distant future. My config is almost the same as yours: Power Tower Pro, Sonnet G4 800, 1GB RAM. |
