Install &/or boot from SCSI HD on PM8500 "int" bs |

Hi Everyone: I would like to exclude people who are using ATA cards and ATA/IDE drives (as boot drives) from the responses I am soliciting here (sorry but your systems are not applicable to my situation). Has ANYONE running a PM7500 or a PM8500 using an INTERNALLY mounted SCSI drive (preferably a "native" 50 pin drive) been able to either install OS X to that drive or boot into OS X from that internal SCSI drive WITH that drive connected to the regular "internal" SCSI bus? ltking |

I've installed OS X to both native narrow SCSI (50-pin) and wide/SCA (68-/80-pin) drives, the latter through adapters via XPF in my 8500 on the fast SCSI bus. Just followed instructions on XPF. Launched OS 9. Placed OS X CD in CD-ROM drive. Launched XPF, set display and keyboard to correct values (keyboard & built-in monitor), set verbose mode on, install to freshly formatted drive. To this day, I have OS 9.1.1 (and 9.2.2) and OS X in separate drives. Prior to installation, I also used Drive Setup to reinitialize the drive to 1 partition. I do not ask the OS X installer to reinitialize the drive. I noticed that while installing 10.2 or maybe even 10.1, the kernel took longer to load from CD-ROM and I thought the install wedged, but right before I was about to reboot, the kernel finished loading. There are stories where people who have had their Macs' internal SCSI chain having incorrect termination (i.e. Mac<-->CD-ROM w/ termination on<-->hard disk w/ termination off). My CD-ROM drive was an Apple 8X, then upgraded to 24X. I have done some upgrades and have not had the chance to reinstall 10.2 (800MHz G4, Pioneer DVD-115 drive via ATA->SCSI adapter). |

I have used this setup many times on both a 7500 and a 8500. The drives used range from a 50pin Seagate 9G, 50pin Quantum 4G, and the Quantum 2G that came with the 8500. In all cases they were attached to the fast internal SCSI bus, the CD-ROM drives were the native drives for the respective machines, and only the last drive on the SCSI chain was terminated. The drives were always formatted in 9.1 with Apple's Drive Setup though also success with Intech's software. The drives now reside in a 9600 in somewhat the same manner and have no problem booting into X. I guess just lucky thus far. Ed |

one other change my email address has changed to fixitjc@allvantage.com I find I can deal with disconnects better at $6.95 / mo rather than $24 / mo I live way out in the woods so no cable or other high speed access yet. |

I have an 8500 g3/500 with 2 internal and one external SCSI drives. I started out with standard 50 pin drives tho now I use 3-9 gig 80 pin w/adapters instead. I have not experienced many of the problems experienced with other machines. I am booting from the fast bus with no problem except on cold starts it usually boots into 9 and I have to change to X using XPF. I started using x with 10.0 and followed the upgrades all the way to 10.2.4. I started with XPF when it had it's other name that I can't remember. I have never set the throttle or done any tweeks other than installing the new extentions as XPF has progressed. Only on one occation have I had "The" sound problem and had to restart to regain system sound, tho I do have to use external speakers to regulate volume. I hope this helps I'll be glad tyo answer any questions you might have. Jim |

Tempest and Joevt: Precisely how did/do you configure XPF so as to boot up? Tempest, you're using a PM8500? Joevt, I am not certain that the 8600's motherboard is that close to the 8500's based on things said in other threads in this forum. My 8500 is now fairly stable with the boot drive starting up on the "external" SCSI bus (but connected to the internal connector for that bus). I would very much like to get it to boot from a drive on the regular higher speed "internal" bus however. To get where I am I've actually used Sonnet's installer. I had intended to start experimenting with XPF and the throttle settings tonight but have run out of time. Thanks for the feedback and I'm looking forward to hearing from you on "how you do it!" Cheers, Lonnie |

I've done that with a PM8600 (which is almost like a PM8500). I have three 2GB drives, one 6GB drive, and one CD ROM drive connected to the internal scsi bus. OS X is on the 6GB drive (I also have OS X on a 20GB ATA drive connected to a Sonnet Tempo Trio). |
