ata upgrade for 9500? |

Running XPF on a 9500, currently with SCSI drives using an Atto UL2D, and a Sonnet G4/800 upgrade card. I need to add a large amount of fast diskspace, but I'm not looking for absolute top of the line. Obviously "large" and "fast" are relative - I don't want anything much slower than the UL2D, but it does not have to be much faster either. I primarily want to put my swap files on it, and mp3s for streaming. I was thinking of the Sonnet Tempo ATA133 card, as I already have an OrangeMicro FW/USB card. But if I get the Trio card, I can use the OrangeMicro in another computer. Would like feedback from those using the Sonnet cards or others, and also ANY thoughts on pros and cons of either the plain ATA133 vs the Trio. Note that I do not need to boot off this card/drive; the UL2D works fine for that; just decently fast storage is what I'm looking for. I'm looking to pick brains for non-obvious advantages or obscure conflicts. Issues like slot compatibility in the 9500, conflicts with other cards, etc. Comments and suggestions? |

Thanks for the feedback guys! I agree, marcush, I think I'll avoid potential bandwidth issues and compatibility, since I have a nicely working USB and FW card already. |

I have the Sonnet ATA/66 with an 80gb 7200rpm Maxtor with 8mb cache, and Maxtor 40gb 7200rpm drive hooked to it. (I also have a 2gb SCSI mounted on top of one of the drives in the lower bay with a homemade rig. I put it in because the SCSI cd rom will lock up the system when accessed if the SCSI drive is NOT in there. If I knew more about termination etc I could probably remove the 2gb, but it's working so why mess with it) Also, if Ryan gets Firewire bootable then I may be able to remove BOTH SCSI drives and just use my Firewire CDRW for booting). I really noticed a difference when I installed OS X on the 80gb drive. Everything (almost) is currently working GREAT! Also installed is the Sonnet G4/700 and two Radeon 7000's (one Mac Edition and the other a 64mb PC version that was Mac flashed according to instructions found elsewhere in these forums). The only thing I can't seem to resolve is the Plaintalk Mic input, but it's not a deal breaker with me as I rarely used it in OS 9. So, I would say go for it, (except you may want to do a little more research about the TRIO because I remember reading about problems with it somewhere in these forums.) Tom |

I have a Sonnet Tempo ATA/100 that has been excellent. It's main purpose is to use my Pioneer DVR-104 as a superdrive with iDVD. I have my boot drive attatched to it and ATTO Tools benchmark utility gives me 27-35MB/s read, write scores. For comparison Firewire via my Ratoc Firewire/USB combo card is faster, with consistent 37MB/s read, writes. The Sonnet Tempo ATA/133 uses the same controller chip and will have identical functionality and similar performance. From what I've seen so far from other users reports the Trio card has mixed results. Because there are three interfaces on one card I suspect you could run into PCI bandwidth issues. This could manifest itself in slow ATA or Firewire performance. I think there were also problems with other PCI cards too if memory serves. Look back in previous forum pages for the posts. It think the thread heading had Tempo Trio in it. Chibbi Delen was the originator of the thread. |
