I'm having trouble getting the SSID setting to stick under 10.2.4 when trying to use this Belkin USB wireless bridge on my 9500. It works perfectly under 9.2.2. Belkin claims to fully support 10.2.4 and tells me that they have not had any other reports of problems with this unit. They claim that they have not tested this device with XPF extensions, so they refuse to support my system. As I bought this unit from CompUSA and the box has been opened, it doesn't look like I can return it and Belkin won't take it back unless it was purchased directly from them. Anyone else tried the F5D6050 on their XPF-enabled systems? Thanks, Tony |

That's the same thing that happened to me before I opened Network System Preferences Panel and set up the interface (en1). Open System Preferences, choose Network, and use the drop down menu to select the Belkin Interface (most likely en1). Set it up for DHCP, or whatever you use, and close the panel. Open the Belkin Wireless Configuration Utility and check again to see if you can set up the SSID. The other thing I did that might help was to choose the Site-Survey option and see if your BaseStation appears. If it shows up, double click on it, or select it and click connect (I'm at work so I can't check the screens right now). That should switch back to the main tab and fill the SSID for you. From then on out everything should work. I would start with the Network Preferences Pane though. I saw the same symptoms (except I could not see my BaseStation in the Site- Survey screen) and it was fixed by setting up the interface. Good luck. Let me know what else I can do to help out! |

OK, that's interesting. After nearly two hours on the phone with Belkin tech support, we narrowed the problem down to the fact that the SSID string would not stick. Every time we entered it, it would change back to ANY or just blank the entry completely. Switched back to OS 9 and the unit worked perfectly. Uninstalled and reinstalled the 10.2 driver and software multiple times but can't get the SSID to stick. The Belkin sees the Airport base (I can see the correct base station MAC address). We've tried it with and without WEP enabled. We even tried shortening the SSID to one word with no spaces. No matter what we try, the SSID changes as soon as we hit the button to save the setting. The overall effect is that the Belkin says connecting... continuously, but never connects. Even tried repairing permissions but that didn't help either. Did you have any problems with your SSID entry sticking? Tony |

Well don't I feel stupid. I got everything working on OSX. I had forgotten to go into the System Preferences -> Network panel and set the thing up. If showed up as en1 in an "ifconfig -a" command in terminal, but it would not work until I set it up in the Network Panel. Actually, I didn't have to set anything up, just open the panel and then close it again. It told me it discovered a new interface and after that it worked. I tried without and with WEP enabled and both worked fine. I rebooted the machine to make sure the WEP key is persistent and it was. I manually entered the key using the HEX part rather than using the Key Phrase. Not sure if that makes any difference, but on both Mac and Windows I have had problems using the Key Phrase so I switched to the HEX format. There is a utility called WEP Key Maker that you can get at http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/6728 that lets you generate the HEX code for any phrase. I have had decent luck using that. Once working, the Belkin Wireless USB is quite nice. It is much more stable than the PCMCIA card I have in my Windows Laptop. Let me know if there are any specific questions I can answer. At this point all I can confirm is that the adapter *does* work on OldWorld Machines using OS9 and OSX. My setup is: PowerMac 7500 PowerLogix G4/450 Processor 128MB of RAM (yuk!) ATTO ExpressPCIPro UL2D SCSI Card 4G, 8G, 17G Ultra SCSI Drives IOGear GUF220 USB2/Firewire PCI Card Sapphire ATI Radeon 7000 PCI Card (flashed) Belkin F5D6050 Wireless USB Adapter Running MacOS X 10.2.4 and MacOS 9.2.2. |

No luck just yet. Sorry about the delay. I did get the machine back up and running, but the Belkin would not work. Had to reinstall OS9 to get it working. Finally got that fixed, but I can't get it to connect in OSX at all. I have some things to try, but if they don't work I'll have to reload OSX. I had the thing working before, so I'm not sure what the problem is. I get power to the adapter, and OSX seems to recognize it, but it won't even detect a network in the SiteSurvey option. Has anyone had trouble with this Wireless USB adapter and OS9? If I leave it connected to the machine and restart it hangs the finder and I have to restart. I have to unplug it and wait for everything to boot before I plug it in. I thought it might be an extension conflict, but it happens even with the "MacOS 9 Base" extension set in Extension Manager. Anyone else seen this? |
