Need help with Radeon 7000 booting... |

I recently had to re-install Jaguar into my PowerMac 7300 (OWC G4 450 mhz ZIF w/XLR8 carrier card, 512 megs RAM). Once I was finished, however, my Radeon 7000 no longer displays the startup "Apple Logo", and doesn't display any image on my monitor until about 2 minutes into the startup sequence. I've had this problem before, and solved it by entering a Terminal command that I found on this forum several months ago: sudo nvram output-device= "pci1/ATY,RV100Parent/ATY,RV100ad_A" Trouble is, this no longer fixes my problem. I also booted back into 9.2.2, and tried to use XPostFacto to direct my output to the Radeon... but that didn't work either. Several questions for anybody that can help: 1. Is my terminal command right? Maybe I entered it wrong. 2. When using XPostFacto to reset the output, I directed the output to the "ATY..." setting, and have tried both the "restart button" in the XpostFacto window and I've tried quitting the XPostFacto and manually restarting. Neither had an effect. Am I missing something. 3. Is there a third solution out there? Thanks in advance, Mike |

Here is what I did to get the grey Apple screen back. I'm not sure if it will work for everyone though. (1) - deselect autoboot in Xpostfacto (2) - select output device in Xpostfacto (your video card) (3) - select input device in Xpostfacto (your keyboard) (4) - reboot to OS X (5) - at open firmware screen type "boot" (6) - reboot from OS X to OS9 (7) - select autoboot in Xpostfacto (8) - reboot to OS X Now I get the gray Apple screen when I boot. |

joevt, I also own an old original Radeon that behaves differently from my 7000. When I install the original Radeon, I ALWAYS get the startup grey apple. I'd use it instead of the 7000 if it weren't for the fact that about 50% of the time when the Radeon has to switch from the boot resolution to my preferred 1024x768 it displays nothing but garbage. The other half it works fine. I share this with you in the hopes that I don't have to do something as complicated as your last posting suggested. Just a thought. Mike |

Do you have any extra options set in XPostFacto? What does it say the settings are in the main window (output-device, boot-device, etc)? Does your monitor support 640x480 67Hz? That is the default boot resolution. Is your monitor connected to the VGA port using an adapter? You can try doing some Open Firmware stuff to see what's going on. Hold down command-option-F to get into Open Firmware. Can you see the Open Firmware output on your minitor? You probably can't if you don't see any output during booting. You would then need to connect your Mac to another computer that is running a program like Z-Term with a serial cable connected to the modem ports. Z-Term should be set to 38400 bps 8N1, local echo off. Press return a few times in Z-Term. If you don't see any output, try pressing return a few times in Open Firmware. If you don't see any output in Z-Term, type " ttya" output in Open Firmware. You should see some output now in Z-Term. You can type the following to also set the input to the modem port: " ttya" input Type printenv and note what it says for output-device. It should be whatever XPostFacto said it would be set to. If it isn't, then there was a problem with writing the setting to NVRAM. Type the following to see where your Radeon card is: dev / ls You should see about 50 lines with something like these among them: FF828F80: /PowerPC,60?@0 FF831670: /bandit@F2000000 FF83FA18: /ATY,RV100Parent@D FF861BA0: /ATY,RV100ad_A@0,0 Using the info above you can set the output-device option like this: setenv output-device pci1/@D/ATY,RV100ad_A where pci1 is an alias for bandit@F2000000 (type devalias to see a list of aliases) and @D depends on the slot that the Radeon card (ATY,RV100Parent) is plugged into. Now try directing output to the Radeon card with this output-device select-dev or this " pci1/@D/ATY,RV100ad_A" output To leave Open-Firmware, type boot |

From OS 9 tell XPF to use the RadeonA as your output device. Then select restart. Sorry if you already tried this, but it works for me here.... Marty |

joevt, I don't have anything connected to the built-in video port. I only have one Optiquest V73 CRT monitor attached to the Radeon 7000 via the VGA port. No other monitors attached. I am indeed using XPostFacto 2.2.5. I checked my settings in XPostFacto again. The output setting is checked on "ATY,RV100ad_A(CRT)". The Modem, Printer, and Monitor settings are not selected. I tried checking verbose mode, and tried restarting using the XPostFacto button, but it didn't work. In fact, my monitor didn't give me any display whatsoever (this happens everytime I try to restart from XPostFacto) throughout the boot process... and I had to force reboot, which gave me my display back. But I still had to wait the irritating 2 minutes before getting any image at all. Any other ideas? Mike |

I can't see anything wrong with your terminal command or the way you used XPostFacto (except that quitting XPostFacto does not do anything to nvram unless you use XPostFacto's restart button). If you have something connected to the built in monitor port then that will override the output-device setting. Are you using only one monitor with the Radeon 7000? Are you using XPostFacto 2.2.5? What does it say for the output-device setting in the main window? Try turning on verbose mode in XPostFacto. |
