HELP...stuck in OS9, can't get back to OSX |

I have a beige G3 with Newer G4/400 upgrade. It has a Maxtor 40BG ATA drive with three partitions - first 8MB for OSX, one for Classic, one for OS 9.2.2. Having installed OSX I was unable to resart in OS9. However, I tried running the OSX installed disk, then restarted with the option key held down and I got it to boot into OS 9.2.2. Now I can't get it to restart in OSX. I have tried several things including running the OSX installer disk, holding down the option key on restart, swapping back to the onboard graphics card and selecting the OSX system folder in the OS9.2.2 startup disk control panel. None of these things work and I am getting worried! Next I will zap PRAM, any other suggestions please?? It will take an age to reinstall the OS and all the updates. |

There's also the System Disk Utility that comes with Darwin that works also. I've been using that one since 10.1. |

YESSSS! Fixed it (after a wasted 5 hours). This is a problem with BEIGE G3s with processor upgrade cards and is subject of a thread on Apple's Beige G3 discussion group. To get back into OSX, you need to download a utility called 'Disk Utility 2.6.2' from Apple's website (do a search). It is like the 'startup disk' control panel, but works for these machines. In case it helps, I have re-installed XPF, here are the settings in the dialog prior to restarting: boot device: mac-io/ide@0:6 boot command: 0 bootr-v auto-boot? true input is set to keyboard and output to screen |

Naturist Have tried installing XPF, zapping PRAM, and selecting OSX in the dialog, to no avail. I can't get anything up on the screen (verbose mode) either. I know that when I first installed XPF it installed some files onto the OSX volume. Could these be creating the problem? |

Much obliged, Naturist When I first installed 10.2.1 2 months ago I tried Xpostfacto and was unable to get the installer to run. So I junked it and started over and..the installer worked, and I have been using OSX happily ever since-until I pressed the option key on startup this morning. However I note that there is still a Xpostfact preferences file in my classic system folder (which I have removed) I have tried restarting with 'X' held down and I get a white screen with "can't open" appearing 35 times. It then goes into OS9's disk with a question mark screen, and tries two times to find a boot volume before opening into 9.2.2. I have also run the Disk Utility on the installer disk and repaired priviledges, etc. Any ideas what to do next? Could I install Xpostfact and see if I can get anywhere using that?. Or should I reinstall OSX (archive & install)and run all the software updates |

the instructions. If you needed XPostFacto to install/use OS X on this machine, you can only reboot into OS X by starting XPF and using it to reboot into OS X. This is clearly stated in the instructions for XPostFacto. And you are right, none of those other options will work. Nor will zapping PRAM, reinstalling either of the OSs and/or the updates. You simply MUST launch XPF in OS 9.2.2, and select restart in OS X from the XPF dialog box. |
