Long overdue, but nonetheless, kudos to the xpostfacto team! I successfully installed OS X on my UMax S 900L with Sonnet's Crescendo G4/400 way back last summer, almost without a glitch. Thanks to the team for the help I received regarding my ATI video challenges back then. I have recently upgraded that system to XPF 2.2.5 and installed Jaguar without a glitch. WOW!!!! You guys ROCK! Well, I was just asked by a client to assist in the conversion of their 9500 which has 288 Megs of RAM, a Sonnet G4/450 processor upgrade, the original apple HD, and an ATI XClaim video card. I tried paging thru the threads to find those relating to the first attempts at upgrading a 9500, but search me...that's a looong process. Is there a way to search the threads for that info? I'd just as soon read what's already been addressed instead of creating a new thread for this. I've just initialized an IBM hot swappable 36.4 GB drive which I have installed with an 80 pin to 50 pin adapter. Finally, I would like to make a more significant contribution to this endeavor than the $10 I paid last year. To whom should I address that check? Thanks again for all your hard and worthwhile work. Just an update of sorts for anyone else who gets the same panic message. I got it last night after finally getting the install done(10.0.3 on a Power Tower Pro). Found this post, and set the output device to the video card, then restarted in verbose mode. It booted into OS X just fine, then. So one of the two must have fixed it. To be honest, unless someone has a real desire to watch the little Mac icon during startup or something, I'd let it boot in verbose mode all the time. That way you can see that it's actually working and not stuck somewhere since the start time can be sorta long. All the text looks like something from a movie, so I think it's pretty neat anyhow. |

We really do need a search feature. I can't say much more than that at this time, but I sure do understand the need. On the kernel panic, it means that Mac OS X isn't loading the ApplePowerSurgePE.kext extension, which would provider the driver for the 9500. I'm not sure why that is, since clearly it is loading the kernel (otherwise, you wouldn't get even this far). One thing you could try is setting the "output device" in XPF, and then holding down command-v as the computer restarts. This should give you some earlier messages about the process of loading kernel extensions, and might provide a clue as to what is happening. |

What size and speed are the RAM sticks in that machine. If they are under 64MB they are likely to be 70ns RAM which would be sub-optimal for OSX. The 64MB and 128MB sticks sold by OWC are rated at 60ns. OS9 or earlier would not have had a problem with older RAM and a G4 card. OSX, however, is very sensitive to timing issues with RAM. It is likely that the G4/450 is pushing this RAM past it's tolerances if it is the original RAM that came with the machine. Also, if there is a mix of old and new RAM you may eliminate this problem by just removing the old RAM. |

I received a different panic when I tried to reboot to the Jaguar CD, which I think has to do with the original apple CD-ROM drive on the 9500. Help/Suggestions? Much obliged :) SOL |
