Griffin USB Powerwave for sound in AND out |

Has anyone out there tried the Griffin Powerwave for sound in/out? It sounds like is works similar to the Onkyo USB device that was mentioned recently, except that this one has a built in amplifier and can run the Apple Pro speakers on "any" computer. I have been looking for some way to get sound in (I'm using all six slots in my 9500). I got interested in the Onkyo device mentioned recently but it has literally disappeared off the web. I cannot find it in stock anywhere. I found this $99 Griffin Powerwave tonight and I'm very intrigued by the built in amp that should let me use some unused home stereo speakers supporting my scanner shelf under my computer table. It has gotten VERY good reviews on newer computers. I went all the way back to January in this forum to see if anyone has used it. Someone mentioned buying an iMic made by the same people but never posted results. Anyone? Tom |

Whoops, I should have clarified -- my bad. I meant, for the iMic (and presumably PowerWave) "never in OS 9" for audio out. Audio in works fine in both 9 and X. Audio out was important for me in OS X because the built-in audio is stuck at full blast. Ivan. |

I downloaded the OrangeMicro USB 2.0 drivers for my IOGear USB 2.0 card as linked from the IOGear support site. I noticed a significant difference in transfer speed of my 4.0 megapixel images after plugging my digital camera into the new USB 2.0 card. Of course the device (in this case, my camera) has to support USB 2.0. So check out those OrangeMicro drivers. They should do the trick. Tom |

I found out - having bought a couple of USB2 cards - that Apple doesn't provide drivers for USB2, and nor does card makers like Adaptec - only USB1.1. So, at this point 2-cards work with 1.1-speed in a Mac! This was the fine print at Adaptec web site - nothing mentioned on the package or by the seller... |

what do you mean "never in os 9"? :) i was first turned on to the imic when i bought my g3/500 ibook, which doesn't support sound in at all. it still runs os 9.1, and i use the imic to connect analog sound sources. it really has never let me down, and i was surprized to see it work on my power mac with an adapter card and os 10.2.4 (and 9.1). -bech |

I also have an iMic, and I think it always works in OS X, and never in OS 9. In OS 9, the Mac clearly sees the unit as an audio device (evident in Apple System Profiler), so the Sound Manager must specifically be preventing its appearing in the Sound control panel. For now, it seems that OS X's Core Audio or whatever it is that recognizes the iMic doesn't seem to mind that it's on a USB bus. So for $35 it is really the ideal solution for XPF users without line in. |

Thanks for your input bech! Am I right in assuming that the Orange Micro card has USB 2.0? Also, may I ask what your processor speed is? Tom |

the imic might work for you. i have a pm7600 and an orange micro usb/firewire adapter card. although it's not supposed to work, the imic works for audio over usb with an adapter card, both in and out. beware: griffin technology told me i was one of the lucky few. -bech |
