Does it matter which cache enabler I use with 10.2 for XLR8 G4 450? Is there any difference in boot time, speed after booting or reliability between L2CacheConfig, PowerLogix or Sonnet? (XLR8 MACh Speed Control 2.6.1 is incompatible with 10.2). |

The development doc for the 7300, 7600, 8600, and 9600 say that only the 9600 has on board L2 cache. The rest use an L2 cache DIMM. The enhanced 8600 and 9600 have the L2 cache inline on the processor card. The 8500 and 7500 use an L2 Cache SIMM. The 9500 has on board L2 Cache. |

Powerlogix cache control X will work fine with the XLR8 upgrade on most any machine IMHO. It is a bit tricky to install but comes with good info on how to to it. It is in fact the only software to use with UMAX S900/J700 and Apple 8600 & 9600 machines. The reason being these machines have motherboard L2 cache that can't be removed(the very last versions of the Apple 8600& 9600 have removeable L2 cache). The powerlogix software lets you disable the motherboard cache. The other software doesn't. A machine with the motherboard cache running is going to be much slower then with it turned off. Ryan's L3 CacheConfig is fine software and I used it for sometime. It was amazing how much faster and better running my J700 Umax is after switching to the Powerlogix software. As far as the Powerlogix software loading late in the booting process. This would only affect boot up time not normal running once the machine is booted.I'd be surprised if this would make more then a couple of seconds difference in boot time.Again this is only for the Umax and Apple 8600 & 9600 machines. Sonnets's software I belive auto turns off the motherboard cache but their software is best used with their upgrades. My machine with XLR8 G3 500 crashes when I tried using it. |

Hi... I think you might wanna contact daystar, I believe they now have a beta version of the cache software for OS.X 10.2. At least that is what i was told by Gary, their in house tech guy. I think they are using the beta test to work out all the kinks, and then offering the cache software at a low price for those who did the testing, and at another price for those that don't get into it early. www.daystartechnolgy.com |

I used Ryan's L2 Cache Enabler software when I got my XLR8 G4 400 from Daystar two weeks ago, and it worked great. One thing to do, though, when you get the XLR8 card first installed is to use XLR8's driver's in OS9, as this will flash the card properly. I didn't do this at first and it was a bit sluggish, but after I did the driver and flash install I got a great speed boost. OS X has never been snappier on the UMAX! |

I've only tried PowerLogix. It starts very late in the boot process which might make it slower. Sometimes it doesn't load (there are errors in the system.log) and I have to reinstall it. I can't wait to trash it and use L3CacheConfig or whatever Ryan is going to call the new version for XPostFacto 3. |
