Hi I bought a Gigabyte G4 MB on Ebay, a powersupply for the GB G4 MB from MacResq (some appeared on ebay much cheaper after I bought :- ( ), and a powerLogiz Series 100 800mhz from OWC, and have assembled a new FrankenMac in a cool aluminum PC case. I took my hard drive out of the 9600 that was running with XPF and want to use it as is. Obvisouly I will have to go in and get rid of some extensions and stuff, but I need it to boot first. The mac comes up with the alternating ? and happy mac in a folder icon when it tries to boot. I assume I need to put the right incantation in the OF for itto find the right thing to boot on the HD. The HD has no OS 9 on it, just OS X. My OS 9 in the 9600 was a sepaate SCSI drive that is staying in the 9600. Can anyone more knowledgable about OF recommend some incantations to try? The HD is plugged in as a master on the UltraATA (main IDE) connector on the logic board. My optical drives on the other hand are on a Sonnet Ata/100 card... Thanks Chad |

The extensions which XPF installs should not interfere with booting on a supported machine. I suppose you can still delete them, since they are not necessary, but they shouldn't cause any harm. It strikes me that the easiest way to do what you want would be to boot from a Mac OS 9.2 Install CD (if you happen to have one), and use the Startup Disk control panel to boot into Mac OS X. It should be able to make the proper Open Firmware settings. I'm not sure whether the Startup Disk that came with 9.1 would be able to do that, though. Otherwise, you'll need to play with Open Firmware--unfortunately, I'm not sure what the correct settings would be on your machine. I actually don't possess any supported machines--perhaps someone who has one can help. |
