CD-R blues (actually flashing greens) |

I discovered accidentally that I could actually burn a CD-R from the desktop in 10.1.5 - I never tried it because SCSI CD-RW drives were supposed to not work. My drive is an old LaCie 2x2x6 drive (with a Phillips mechanism) that was barely usable with Retrospect, but serves its purpose under 9.1. When I upgraded to Jaguar, it won't burn anymore ("can't find supported CD writer") but it DOES show up as a CD writer in System Profiler, and a blank disk will mount on the desktop, properly labelled "CD-R". I can live with this, at least for a while. However, periodically (about every 5-10 seconds), the green status light on the device flashes a few times, and I can hear some disk activity on other SCSI drives. This doesn't always happen, but once it starts, it never stops. It's as if the SCSI driver has to keep polling every drive to see if a disk was inserted (but it seems to poll the non-removable drives as well). When this happens, I appear to have more problems shutting down the system (as in the other thread) or other problems, but I haven't done a real study on it yet, so it could be my imagination. The CD-R drive is attached to an Adaptec 2930 card along with an old Quantum 1G external drive and an ORB. I haven't checked whether the ORB works under Jaguar yet, but like the CD-R it worked fine under 10.1.5. The Quantum never has a problem. All my other disks are on the Apple SCSI buses. For the record, I have an 8500 with 160 MB of RAM and a Newer Technology 250MHz G3 accelerator. I am amazed that it works as well as it does. Also, at the moment, the light isn't flashing, but it probably will start to do so after I access a file on the Adaptec SCSI bus. Ed |

I've confirmed that the problem is due to the Adaptec bus being reset every 20 seconds. It only happens when the CD-RW drive is powered up. This drive, unlike all the other drives on the bus, requires asynchronous transfers, which apparently are not supported by the new (1.1.1) Adaptec driver. I will try to load the old driver under Jaguar to see if it will work. |
