Let me get this straight: i can't install OS 10.2 on my 7300 unless I upgrade to a G3/G4, correct? i've installed 10.1.5 and it runs and runs, no problems. i'm about to commit to turning this old box into a multimedia server for my home LAN (mp3, and maybe video). Currently, i've got a Linux box doing that via nfs, but it's old and hard drive size limitations (mobo/bios) are forcing me to choose the 7300. so, i've been looking at atapi pci cards for big ide drives for the 7300. anybody wanna make any recommendations for an G3/G4 upgrade and atapi pci card? -sTv |

I have been running a NewerTech G3/300 512kCache for the past two years on my 7300/180. It's run flawlessly that entire time. I've upgraded to a NewerTech G4/350 1MegCache and am installing 10.2 at this very moment. It's taking forever to install. But I understand that's "normal". Anyway, I was going to send my G3 card to Larry @OWC - he's agreed to give me a $50 credit for it - but if you want it for the same $$ let me know. I paid $115 for the G4 card, which I found on Ebay. Best, m. |

I am using the Acard Ahard ULTRA66 card, which poses as SCSI and thereby doesn't have the 8 gig limit imposed on it. I have it hooked to a 60G Maxtor and also an amazing 40X Teac burner I got from OWC. These are on there own seperate channels. Both drives perform flawlessly on this 55$ card. I think a G4/450 is currently the best price/performance option. Although a G3/400 can be had for about $115 and that's pretty good too. The Sonnet G4/800 card seems too expensive for what it delivers, and the Powerlogix G3 800 isn't available yet, but does look interesting at $299. |

I have used a VST/33 pci card (I think it was designated 33) with success to run a DVD-ROM drive in a 7500. I wouldn't hesitate to try a big IDE drive with that card, although I never have--why try to shoot yourself in the foot!! SCSI rules. There are several others, but none that I have personal experience with. Mark |

that is indeed so. 10.1.5 will run fine on a 601/603/604 processor, but 10.2 will not run at all. the 601/603/604 chips would have been G1s if Apple had been using that designation at the time, and the 603e/604e chips (which 10.2 won't run on either) would have been G2s. 10.2 flat out requires at least a G3. |
