Twentieth Anniversary Mac Possibilities? |

I've a TAM with a Sonnet g3/500, maxed ram. I decided to try XPostFacto 2.2.5 on it just to see if perhaps... Well, the TAM did NOT like 10.2, the usual black screen of death, had to pull everything and let it sit for an hour or so. Then I tried 10.1, still no joy. Then, off-handedly I decided to try 10.1 server, and behold!!! it booted!!!! I get to the second screen in the install process and then the installer 'unexpectedly quits,' but still, my eyes were wide... Still, the installer quit, and worst of all, there was no backlighting! Using a flashlight to see the display was a bear. I'm hoping XPo v3 might alleviate the quit problem, but does anyone have any ideas on the backlighting? I tried the backlight on command at the OF prompt, but no success. Okay, so I realize running 10 on a crippled machine like this is kinda pointless, but I like challenges and this one is truly a big foolish endeavor. Any input would be appreciated. Regards |

Manuel: Any USB PCI card should work in the TAM with the fat back. Most vendors no longer sell USB 1.1 PCI cards. OWC doesn't sell any cards that are just USB. (The Sonnet Tango won't work in X, although it will work in 9 with a patch.) NewEgg has this USB2 PCI card for $18 shipped: http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProduct.asp?description=17-111-751 Can't really complain at that price. It probably won't work in USB2 mode, but USB 1.1 stuff should work just fine. I suspect that the card itself will work without drivers, like most other USB cards. Good luck! Let me know how you make out with the card and the Belkin! Let's keep hoping our LCD backlight turns on soon! (hope that didn't sound too pathetic) Peace, Frank |

Franck, Many thanks for your reply, but I'm looking for a slim PCI to PCMCIA card I could fit in into my TAM. However your suggestion and recommendations are very interresting, maybe I'll go for the Belkin solution as I already own a F5D6050 (I'm testing 802.11b support for Newton and eMate). Would you recommend a slim USB card for the TAM in particular ?... --Manuel |

Isn't a TAM godaweful slow running 10.1.5? Sounds painful to me. My room mate here just bought a 17" imac G4/800 superdrive refurb from the Applestore for $1399.... THE SCREEN IS INCREDIBLE. TAM is still cool, but probably not an OSX machine IMHO. Marty PS I have an 8500/604 150Mhz running OSX server here, so TAM would be OK for that kind of role.... |

Manuel: Funny, my TAM is (was?) the last Mac OS 9 machine in my house too. If I needed 802.11b on my TAM, I would install a plain jane 4-port USB card and the Belkin USB Wireless adapter, part number F5D6050. Belkin has developed drivers for 9.x, 10.1.x, and 10.2.x! product link: http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=122761 driver: http://web.belkin.com/support/download/download.asp?download=F5D6050 I would think this would be preferable to a wireless-to-ethernet bridge (like the LinkSys WET11) for these reasons: 1. Bridge would need to get wired network on TAM working 2. Belkin F5D6050 seems to be powered by USB port, whereas bridge requires AC adapter 3. Belkin is $75 new, $40 refurb. Cheaper than $110 LinkSys WET11. 4. Extra USB ports allow access to other, newer peripherals Please note that USB/FireWire combo cards will probably not (maybe never?) work in X at all in the 6400/6500/TAM, regardless of what the vendor claims for 9. FYI, I have a Farallon EtherFast 10/100+ CS2 card installed and 10.1 recognized it without a problem. Also, I have a Sonnet USB/FireWire card that doesn't work in X (works great in 9) which I will probably replace with a FireWire card, with a CD burner off of that. I intend to set up the TAM as a music playing, music CD burning station, with a centralized iTunes library and playlists courtesy of Tip 2 iTunes Central on this page: http://www.macdevcenter.com/pub/a/mac/2003/02/04/homemade_dot_mac.html Now if only the backlight worked! (The volume seems a little quiet too... has anyone else noticed that?) Peace, Frank |

I also have a TAM with a Sonnet G3 @ 400 Mhz. It's the my last 'active' Mac I have running Mac OS 9.1. I remember having this discussion about XPF TAM support with Ryan few months ago, in May 2002. The TAM motherboard and the Performa/PowerMac 6500 are more or less the same and Ryan at that time was making progress on the 6500. However Ryan had also more important priorities ;-). Whether or not, we'll have OS X running on our beloved TAM one day, I wonder what performances we'll get, with a 50 MHz bus and knowing that 128 MB is the max DRAM the TAM is able to handle, but that will be definitely very nice to see ! --Manuel BTW and off-topic : Is there a PCI to PCMCIA card available somewhere I could fit into my TAM ? I'd love to use Airport or any 802.11b solution ;-) |

Hey, nice to know you're getting closer on the TAM. Great work; amazing stuff. Is there any chance of 10.2 on this machine? Is the 603 easier to fool with than the 604? BTW, I have a Farallon EtherFast 10/100 CS2 card installed that 10.1 treats darn well: came right up, no tweaking. Having less luck with Sonnet USB/FireWire card. The Sonnet Tango/TempoTrio Open Firmware Patch doesn't seem to stick after running XPostFacto. (I was thinking for sure that the ethernet card wasn't going to work and the best way to get network was the Belkin USB Wireless adapter that xlr8yourmac.com has been talking about lately. Maybe I'll replace it with a plain FireWire-only card instead.) Also experiencing the no backlight issue. Thanks again for the great work! Peace, Frank |

I just sent a fun e-mail to the tech support guys at Sonnet Technologies kindly asking if they'd consider making the L2/G3-upgrade card OSX enabler software that they were working-on-but-discontinued available as open-source or something for the community... wishful thinking, but I figured anything helps. :-) Keep up the good work Ryan! |

We're getting closer on the TAM. We're seeing the backlight issue now as well (pun intended), and I have a few ideas about how it might be solved. So, stay tuned ... |
