PowerTower Pro and Jaguar Bizarrities |

I seem to have this knack for the strange and unusual, so here goes... I have a PTP, maxed on RAM, with a SIIG ATA card (rebranded ACard, 6280M chipset), 30Gig Western Digital, and Sony CDRW. I can load Jaguar on it without incident, but the minute I shut it down, it refuses to boot back into 10.2, and normally gets stuck initializing the ACARD, and occasionally I can boot into 9 and force it to boot by reinstalling bootx and exetnsions, but there's no consistency. Really this isn't odd, except I know this machine can run Jaguar, as I had it running off of the secondary SCSI chain, albeit god- awful slow. Also, I attempted to load 10.1, and couldn't even get through the boot process to the installer. Now, here's the weird part. As I type this, I'm typing it on the PTP running 10.1 Server!!! With all of the machines I've played on that didn't like 10.1 or Jaguar, they all seemed to take to server readily. Now, I'm not totally dissatisfied with server, but I'd prefer Jaguar for speed considerations, and things like Safari and other apps which I'm sure WON'T be compatible with earlier versions of 10. Any ideas? Thanks in advance... |

lei1 - I standed corrected, it updated the firmware the second go around. Don't ask me why it wouldn't work the first time. I did try 10.2 again after starting this thread, but still no joy. I could get it to boot a couple of times, get stuck on initializing the ACARD, or error out on loading the mach. I went back to 10.1 server with no difficulties. |

Indeed you can update the SIIG controller with the Acard updates/firmware as I have updated my own card successfully. |

It has the Acard controller chip so the Acard firmware will work with it. Check out the FAQ section at xlr8yourmac.com. As I recall this should not be a problem. |

lei1 - Unfortunately the card is SIIG branded, which means the firmware updates @ ACARD won't work, unless someone's got a workaround. Good idea though... |

Doc Since it seems to hang on initializing the IDE controller make sure to visit the Acard site and download/install the latest drivers & firmware for your card's chipset. If you have not done this it may help. |

I am running Jaguar (10.2.4) on my PTP from a 60G Maxtor hooked to the acard ahard 66, and it works great. I also have the Teac 40x burner that OWC sells hooked to the second channel set to cable select and it burns PERFECTLY. Pretty sweet set up. supports 4 users and runs hard for days and days and days. Voodoo 5 5500 as the display, which actually works OK, but no 3d or QE and pretty slow considering what this card could do under 8.6. Hopefully now that the flashing el cheapo PC cards is working I'll grab an ATI PCI card. Although I sure wish there was a better option, maybe I can get my PC Radeon 9000 going.... Marty |
