Hey.. everybody, first I'd like to thank those who answered my previous question when I was getting all my hardware set, so I could install OS X.. I had a 9500 with a Newer G4 350mhz, ATI VR, TwinTurbo 8mb, Atto Express (from Biege G3).... the install with Xpo work perfect on the first try. The system is stable.. the video is slow, but I plan to get a Radeon 7000. Anyways what I'd like to know is it possible to get OS X on a drive that is connected to the Atto card. I've tried to install a second OS X drive but to no avail. Also I can't seem to boot off the Mac OS X install disk anymore (I'd like to use it to use Disk Utility.) The Atto ExpressPCI card has the newest ROM (1.6.6f0), it has 1 internal drive (68pin cable with terminator) and 1 external 9gig attached. Any Help would be appreciated. mike |

I just spent the better part of today attempting to get a raid case and an internal UW drive running on a couple of ATTO PSC PSI cards I purchased on ebay. I managed to flash the firmware on both cards to 1.6.6, after doing the apple/ATTO hack on one of them .The other was an ATTO retail version. I can see both cards with proper firmware installed in apple system profiler, but all kinds of hell breaks loose when I attempt to attach a drive to either of the cards(blank screen, etc.) The 8500 seems to not want both cards in PCI slots simultaneously, but even with a single card, the drives won't come up. I thought it might have been a hard disk driver problem. My wide drives all have SoftRaid drivers and I've tried to reformat with drive setup(OS 9.2), FWB HDToolkit, and HDST(3.5). Nothing will allow me to take over the SoftRaid drivers or reformat the drives. I finally got the internal SE wide drive to mount using the Disk Warrior startup CD to boot into 9.1, and show up in the ATTO utility for OSX, but no dice on changing the SoftRaid format. I got a message in HDST that there was a program in use on the SE wide drive (which I had just reformatted in SoftRaid). It seems like I'm locked into SoftRaid permanently and they don't have anOSx compatabilityupgrade yet. As for the ATTO cards, they appear to be useless in my 8500 running between 9.2 and 10.2.4. I can't even get them to work with a 9.2 startup drive. I have my old Miles UW coming back in a day or so in a version which is OSX upgradable. Now I'm afraid to possibly ruin the OS9 functionality of that card by flashing the ROM for use with XPost Facto. Thanks for any thoughts you have..... |

Hi MrMac, [I had a nightmare scenario with a 9600/200MP upgraded by a Newer G3 400. Never could get OS X stable (see my 2 reports in "XPF killed my Mac" thread some months ago). I had been installing OS X on a drive on SCSI bus 0 on the Mac.] However, I now have a very happy OS 10.1.5 running off of my ATTO Express PCI card. So, the ATTO may very well have been what FIXED my situation. Be sure to use the Drive Set Up utility that came with OS 9.1 (or later). Also, if you are trying to install on that 9 Gig, then you need to partition the drive to a maximum of 8 gigs for the OS X install drive. The remaining 1 gig will have to be used as storage, I guess. I used XPF 2.2.5 (the latest) to finally get OS X on my Mac. Good luck. Jonathan |

Mike about that drive connected to the ATTO Express, how did you formatted/initialized it ? You shoud use Apple's Drive Setup from OS 9.x. Is that drive mounted on OS 9.x ? |

Well I had already tried using XPostFacto several times to install on the drive that is connected to the AttoExpressPCI card.... but no luck. It starts the process but the grey Apple never comes up, it eventually just starts back up on the OS 9.1 volume. |

Hi MrMac, I have the same ATTO Express PCI card running on my G4 DP 800, but it worked the same way with my 7500 running XPF. If you need to use Disk Utility and you already have Mac OS X installed don't forget it's located in the /Applications/Utilities directory. You can check if the drive is connected to the ATTO card with the Apple System Profiler (ASP) utility (also in /Application/Utilities). When ASP is launched (can take sometime on a 9500) go to the Devices and Volumes tag and select the PCI slot your ATTO card is plugged in. Additionnaly you can have a look at the Bus > ISOSCSIParrellelDevice to check if your drive is identified (whether your drive is formatted, initialized or not). Now if you really need to boot from the OS X install disk, I'm afraid you have to boot on Mac OS 9.x first (press the option key at startup), insert your Mac OS X install CD and from XPostFacto specify that you want to boot from the install CD. Unless I'm wrong I don't know any other solution. Once you've booted from the install CD you can use Disk Utility from the Installation Application. Hope this helps ?.. --Manuel |
