DV audio sync fix? |

There have been some reports of audio sync problems in imovie and/or QT on this forum, and I guess we've been assuming it is a legacy mac problem. I also have been plagued with this. I was recording old VHS onto my Sony TRV10 cc, and upon import to OSX/imovie3 (or BTV Pro in OS 9.1 by the way), the audio would gradually loose sync with duration of the video. Then, I stumbled upon an apple knowlege base article that this is caused by recording audio in 12-bit (so it was a general problem, not a legacy mac problem). Sure enough, that was my Sony default setting. It doesn't do any good to change the playback to 16-bit. I had to re-record on the Sony after setting to 16-bit, and then re-import. Then everything was fine. No audio sync issues all the way to the end of the tape (about 60 minutes) (I always test by outputting to mp4 or other compressed .mov, because my hardware can't handle the uncompressed, high-bit-rate sound in the original DV format, especially while simultaneously playing video). This also cleared up some weird behavior (lock-ups, slow-downs, panics, dropped frames, etc.) while OS X/imovie was communicating with the Sony. Note that this Sony is not listed by apple as compatible (but the TRV11 is). I don't know if the 16-bit thing will also fix BTV-Pro's sync problem, but it wouldn't surprise me. Adobe Premier LE 5.1, OS 9.1 was a lot better originally (less unsync), and this will probably clear it up. Premier is also very flexible. It had a 12-bit setting, which I never tried because I didn't know any better a couple days ago. Old legacy motherboard sound problem is still there (sound quits working if I'm dumb enough to play broken-up, high-rate DV sound from within imovie). I'm thinking of buying a Griffin iMike (USB sound I/O device). Advertised for "native" USB, but most of that stuff works on USB PCI cards. 7500/G4 800, ATI Radeon, 384MB RAM, USB2, Firewire, LVD SCSI, 10.2.4, imovie 3.0.2 |
