Hi, I have serious trobule to run Jaguar on my 7300 with Sonnet G4/800, 512MB of RAM, Radeon PCI Original, VST UltreTek + 80 GB IBM and USB cards. The Mac always freezes at the "Blue Screen". The initial grey Apple phase goes fine. Also in verbose mode there is nothing extraordinary.. When installing, I had to use the internal video. After install and updating to 10.2.4, installing Sonnet extensions etc. all seemed to work with the internal video but as soon as I try to boot with a monitor connected to the radeon there is a freeze in the blue screen phase. I removed the USB card (PowerLogix Rapidfire USB/Firewire combo) and Radeon seemed to be working but as soon as I put the USB card back - freeze at the blue screen. Tried with different card (Belkin 4-port, only 1 port works with old computers) and the effect is the same. If there is a USB card present, the Radeon will not work. Both my USB cards use Lucent (Agere) USB chips (USS-312 and USS-344). I put my old PoweLogix G3/400 back and OS X worked fine. Put the G4/800 back and there was a freeze. I also tried to disable the Radeon X extensions but this did not help. I guess there is a conflict with the Radeon, Sonnet G4/800 and USB drivers. Disabling USB extensions would probably help (case would be the same as without an USB card) but I need USB with OS X. I have tried everything: all kinds of memory config from 128 MB to 512 MB interleaved/ non-interleaved/different slots but there is no difference. I have 2 x 128 MB and 4 x 64 MB DIMMs. I have tried to install the PCI cards to different slots. I even removed VRAM modules from the builtin-video. I have removed all internal and external SCSI devices from all buses. The motherboard L2 cache module was thrown awat three years ago. Nothing helps. In OS 9 (both OS 9.1 and patched OS 9.22) Mac seems to be working fine. Just no go in OS X with monitor connected to the Radeon and USB card installed. Does anybody run a similar system and how? Which USB card do you use? |

You should verify that all of your RAM is running at the same speed. All 60ns or all 70ns. 60ns would be preferred from an OSX perspective I believe. OSX is extremely sensitive to RAM. If your RAM is running at different speeds you could be having timing issues. Your 128's should be 60ns. The 64's I would question. In OS 9.x.x you can run Gauge Pro or Guru to determine the speed your RAM is running at. I would test the 128's and the 64's separately. If the 64's are running at 70ns then I would sell them and get 128's in their place. OWC's RAM works without problems in most cases. |

I used the G4/800, Radeon and ADS USB card in a powertower pro. Never encountered any problems like that. Have you tried running Norton's or Diskwarrior to examine/repair the drive? Have you tried repairing permissions? |
