So far, so good. I put an xlr8 G3 300MHz upgrade card in this old 7300, 512MB RAM, 2Gb and 4Gb SCSI HDs, original Apple SCSI CD (HDs and CD on secondary SCSI bus), FireWireStuff firewire/usb PCI card, Global Village Teleport serial modem, 200Gb firewire drive external. it serves my multimedia needs on my home LAN (iTunes stores its library there). it would crash w/ kernal panics after i installed jaguar, and i think the answer was that the 4Gb drive that runs jaguar (the 2Gb drive has 2 partitions, 9.1 and 9.2) runs hot (seagate ST15150N), so i removed the plastic cover on the Mac's case from in front of the drive to improve airflow, and it has behaved ever since. ugly but functional, yes. the modem decodes callerid info and cidtracker (http://afterten.com/) serves the info up to my LAN. i noticed that jaguar did not like to do big installs via software update. the 10.2.4 update, iphoto, imovie, any large update would crash the box with a kernal panic. so i had to download the updates and install them manually, which worked. thanks to ryan and this list, that old box can continue to give me service for years to come. and oh yeah it's got a 14-in. Apple CRT monitor and the motherboard has 4Mb VRAM (whoopee!...). |
