i had my 7300/300 G3 running jaguar just fine, and all was well, no kernel panics for a week, great. then, i found a 300MHz G3 beige tower for $100 and started fixing it up for a friend (upgrade from a 6100 G3). the G3 tower had 384Mb RAM, a 4Gb ultraSCSI HD and an apple ultraSCSI PCI card. wow, and it is supported hardware for jaguar! so, of course, i couldn't let well enough alone, so i nabbed the ultraSCSI pieces and stuffed them in my 7300. i never could get OS X to install from the primary scsi bus on the 7300, always had to use the slower secondary scsi bus. in any event, the apple ultrascsi card has a 50-pin connector, so i connected my apple internal scsi cd to the ultra card, and it is installing jaguar as i type this note. seems to be behaving itself nicely. anybody else try this? don't know the specs on the ultra card, but i figure it's got to be faster than the secondary scsi bus. |

preliminary report: jaguar install on this beast went as smoothly as an install on a supported machine. no hiccups, no kernel panics...neat. so far, i've not seen any hint that there's trouble brewing, and it is fast! in addition to updating the ultra card's firmware to the latest from atto, i re-installed the rest of the 800Mb RAM that had originally occupied the memory slots on this machine. trouble with the initial jaguar install led me to read many articles on this list concerning interleaving RAM, then the most recent one suggested leaving the cache card installed with the G3 upgrade and interleaving the RAM, which i did. i had shrunk the RAM to 512 for the earlier installs. now it seems to be behaving itself with the 800Mb RAM...go figure. in any event, i'm watching it update itself to 10.2.4...which just fininshed. the box will act as a file server for my mp3/divx/DVD library, so it doesn't have to have the hottest graphics card, video hardware, etc., and besides, the Mac was free, the RAM came with it, the monitor was in a dumpster, with the kybd/mouse, the G3 upgrade was $70. we'll see what kind of mileage we get out of it. gotta love apple's committment to OS X...much more stable than OS9. so, to re-cap: -7300/200 w/xlr8 MaCH G3 300MHz upgrade -800Mb RAM interleaved -apple ultraSCSI card (firmware updated to latest ATTO version) -IBM 4Gb ultraSCSI HD -apple 12x SCSI internal CD connected to ultraSCSI card -L2 cache card remains on mobo -2Gb SCSI internal HD )2 partitions, 9.1 and 9.2.2 -firewirestuff firewire/usb combo card -200Gb WD ide HD in external firewire case -43Gb Seagate ultraSCSI HD in external SCSI-2 case (what the he**, it was $24 new) -15in Apple multi-scan monitor (slowly dying) -global village teleport 28.8 modem (caller id server (cidtracker)) -Bob K. |

I used the Apple updater only, not any newer ATTO one. Hope you haven't over updated. Marty |

as for the firmware update, since i seem to be afflicted mightily with the "can't let well enough alone" virus, i went spelunking and found an updater from the guy who wrote the OS9Helper thingy. his page has links to atto's downloads page for more recent updaters. so, i updated the card to the latest firmware. i'm in the middle of re-configuring my trusty 7300, so i'll post my findings when i'm finished. thanks for the tips! |

Use the wider connector, it provides twice the data path... Yes, with the firmware update this is an excellent wide card for OSX on unsupported Macs. Marty |

I had this problem when putting OS X on a beige G# with the aforesaid card. I updated the firmware and everything went smoothly. Here is a link to the apple KB that might help you. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25176 |

I think that there are some firmware update from apple that you have to do in order to use the card from X |
