OSX available disk space???? |

Have taken the plunge with OSX on my Beige G3(upgraded with Newer G4/ 400 ZIF and Maxtor 40GB ATA drive) and has worked a treat for two months now. I can recommend taking the time to move up to OSX. There is one issue I have come across relating to available disk space. Because of my hardware I was forced to install OSX into the first 7 or 8GB of the drive (I partitioned it with three partitions as per recommendations in this forum). Although this first partition is 7.72 GB in capacity, Get Info tells me it is holding 2.709GB of files and folders (presumably plus invisibles) but I only have 313MB left available to use for installations. Any idea how to free up the missing 4.8GB (or is this massive hit due to 'segment size'?). If I can't free it up are there any tips about using the other partitions? (one contains Classic, the other a plain copy of OS9, which for some reason I can't boot from). I was thinking of moving folders such as Users or Applications there and then accessing them via an alias of each folder in the first partition of the drive. Will this work? All ideas gratefully received! Anthony Charnley |

Well, I got to the bottom of the original problem:- I have several users set up on this machine. The folder sizes shown only relate to the current user, not the other users, EVEN THOUGH I AM SET AS THE ADMINISTRATOR. That has got to be a bug! I only found this out by calculating the folder sizes in OS9. I also solved how to switch to OS9,(I used the OSX Jaguar installer to examine the volumes, and then pressed option whilst restarting but now I can't switch back to OSX!. I have tried several things including running the OSX installer disk, holding down the op[tion key on restart, swapping back to the onboard graphics card and selecting the OSX system folder in the OS9.2.2 startup disk control panel. None of these things work and I am getting worried! |

Thanks Jonck Brings me on to my other problem- when I try to boot up in my non-classic 9.2 from my third partition, having selected this in the 'Startup Disk' system preferences panel, it just boots in OSX. I have seen posts indicating that the only way of doing this is to start up off an OS9 CD, and select the 9.2 system from its startup disk control panel. Having said all that, why can't I run Disk Warrior straight from the CD? What is different? Any observations before I take the plunge? |

Hmmm, sounds very strange. Have you tried running a disk utility program like Disk Warrior (needs to be run out of OS 9, not Classic). Sorry I can't be of any more help, it's the best I can think of at this time, though I'm sure you've done this already. Cheers, Jonck |
