Old monitor/Old Mac/X - which way to go? |

I have two old - but still excellent - monitors, E-Machines 1024x768@67 Hz and RasterOps 1024x768@60 Hz.The monitors work ok when attached to an old Matrox Millennium PCI graphics card (VGA/5BNC cable, special drivers) - but only under OS9. Booting MacOSX after proper use under OS9 results a screen out of sync. From the Dispalys control panel (using a second monitor attched to internal video) I cannot select those refresh rates, the two screens are, however, recognized. From Matrox there are no new drivers available since 1998/MacOS8. Are there any recommendations to a graphics Card to enable those monitors under X? [The internal video apparently doesn't support those refresh rates either.] My system is PM 7600/G3/300/MacOS C9.2/X10.2.4/[15" Multisync monitor]. |

Your internal video should support 1024x768 @ 60Hz under OS X. I've just confirmed that this is possible on my 8600 which I think shares the same video hardware as your 7600. The crucial thing with the built-in video is the cable or adapter you attach to the DB15 connector. If OS X identifies the display attached to the built-in video as a VGA display then the required resolution should be available as long as you UNcheck the item "Show Modes Recommended by Display". If your video cable/adapter identifies the display as one of Apple's many offerings then the available video resolutions may be more limited. However, since excellent CRT displays are so cheap now you might as well buy a new monitor rather than investing in a video card to drive one of your old ones. I'm assuming the Matrox works well enough under OS X to drive a modern monitor at 1024x768 75Hz or better. |

Aye. I had the same problem. I believe under OS X in the Displays panel, you must select some option to "show all refresh rates", because otherwise it will grey out everything but those that it detects from the monitor. Other then that. It's time to upgrade if those monitors can't do 70hz+ @ 1024x768. 60 and 67 Hz will cause flickering.. In my opinion. Anything past 1995 should do some crazy resolutions with usually higher rates. |
