partitioning and first 8GB requirement |

I am installing OS X on a PM 8500 with a 20 GB Sonnet Tempo HD. I partitioned the drive but the OS X installer won't let me install to either of the partitions because they are not within the first 8 GB of the hard disk. How do I get around this? |

naturist has the best idea. i have a PM7600 with a newertech G3 and a tempo HD with a travelstar 40GNX. i have a 7.9gb partition for just osx 10.2.4, the rest of the drive for everything else. mac os 9.1 is on a separate 3gb scsi drive. the partition for os x can get full and fast, so if it doesn't need to be in that partition, i use the remaining 30 gb of drive space. this works just fine for me. -bech |

Another thing you can try if you still have a SCSI drive available would be to install X on this drive first. You can then clone this drive to the full 20G HD Tempo drive with only one partition. It is a limitation that Apple imposes on the installer script and not a problem with the Sonnet drive. I am using currently a 120G Hard Drive connected to a Tempo 133 with only one partition. The hard drive can be cloned using either Carbon Copy Cloner or something like Retrospect. |

I have a 75G Deskstar @ Tempo ATA100. I have partitioned it into three (in Mac OS 9.1): 1. 4096 MB, 2. 4096 MB, and 3. the rest of the disk. I can install X on partitions 1 and 2. I guess it would be possible to make the 1st partition 8192 MB and install X on it. Mac OS 10.1.5 fit nicely on 4096 MB (or even 2048 MB) but it is getting rather full with 10.2, Developer Tools and 3rd party apps so go for 4096 MB. BTW, I also have a 50-pin 18G Ultrastar SCSI disk and there is no need to partition it but I prefer the ATA disk for its 2x speed as a boot drive. |

1. reformat the drive using the Apple Drive Setup, if possible. 2. partition the drive into two partitions, THE FIRST OF WHICH _MUST_ BE less than 8 gigabytes. Try 7.9 gigabytes, or 7.5, but don't try 8 "exactly" as this will likely fail. 3. install OS X on the first partition. Note that it is not enough to partition the drive. The first partition must lie ENTIRELY within the first 8 gig of the drive. It is no good making the first partition 12 gig, and the second 8 gig. Nor is it gonna work if the first partition winds up being 8 gig plus 1 byte. |
