Anyone having problems with iTunes 4? |

HI All, I am running a 7500 with a Sonnet G3/450/1mb cache with built-in audio. I think I am on the edge of the performance window for iTunes 4 ( I believe Apple recommends minimun G3 @ 400). What I am encountering is that after I 1st bootup, I can get iTunes 4 to work. But if I start another App. or change setting in iTunes, it will stop playing. I can change songs, but the song timer will not increment. Also I get no QuickTime 6.2 audio at all. Any recommendation? |

Just received this from Sonnet tech support: "We are aware of sound bugs in the older machines running under OS X. We have been looking at the issue for a while and are not sure if there is anything that can be done. Keep an eye on the support part of the web page for updates." |

I have the same entries in system.log--a series of entries like: ...IOAudioStream[0x1c32000]::clipIfNecessary() - Error: attempting to clip to a position more than one buffer ahead of last clip position (1a,2878)->(1c,25d). ... IOAudioStream[0x1c32000]::clipIfNecessary() - adjusting clipped position to (1b,2878) 8500 with Sonnet G4/800, all SCSI. This has got to be the heart of the no-sound problem. |

For what it's worth, I've found that by handling all of my audio with a Griffin iMic via USB, I'm much happier. (For one, volume works on my 2400.) I know that USB audio isn't supposed to work with USB cards, and it doesn't in OS 9, but it seems to work fine in X -- at least the iMic does. Now, in other weirdness, I am running 10.2.4 on my 2400 and the same on my iBook, and for whatever reason iTunes 4 on the 2400 won't access my shared library. It sees it, but when I click on it, it starts to load and then immediately resets itself. Most aggravating -- I am using my 2400 as a server hooked to my stereo, and I love the idea of sitting on the couch and playing music from my iBook wirelessly to my stereo. I guess it's just aggravating that I don't understand why it doesn't work. I wonder if lack of onboard Ethernet has anything to do with it. Has anyone else successfully used an XPF machine to play Rendezvous- shared songs from another machine? |

I never had any audio problems with my Acard ATA/133 or with my current Sonnet Tempo ATA/100. Have you tried moving the card to the first PCI slot if it isn't there already. That is the best place for bus mastering cards. |

I am running a G3/500 with jaguar 10.2.5 with an acard ATA-100. No problems at all. I also have a yamaha CD/RW external SCSI. It is recognised by Itunes and writes music that I bought from the music store to an audio CD. |

I get those entries in my system.log if I have my display connected to my Radeon 7K is put to sleep while iTunes is playing and sound will be broken with the symptoms you describe until I reboot. My configuration is all SCSI. What I think is happening is an interrupt or timing issue. Otherwise, I very rarely have these entries. And when my system is very busy doing disk-intensive or other CPU-intensive tasks, the sound will stutter a bit but will not go out permanently. |

Update: I updated my Acard ATA controller card to the latest firmware for OS X 10.2.X (v1.51) @ http://www.acard.com/eng/support/mac.html. I also upgraded to OS X 10.2.5, because a friend though this dot release corrected a number of issues. But no joy. The firmware seemed to help a little, but I still encounter the same issues with iTunes & QuickTime. I noticed that Acard does have an AV Optimzier for OS 8.X & 9.X, but nothing for OS X. In the system.log file I am seeing these messages repeated many times: IOAudioStream[0x1f1a500]::clipIfNecessary() - Error: attempting to clip to a position more than one buffer ahead of last clip position (1bbc,27f3)->(1bbe,891). IOAudioStream[0x1f1a500]::clipIfNecessary() - adjusting clipped position to (1bbd,27f3) Is there a way to allocate more processor time or increase the buffers in iTunes with this OS? Cheers, |

I don't have any problems with iTunes playing mp3's but I noticed last night that it was not detecting a CD when it was inserted. This happened with both my internal Pioneer DVR-104 and an external Toshiba DVD-CD/RW firewire drive. Both drives were detected properly by iTunes 3 and launched the app when a music CD was inserted. The curious thing is that both drives are selectable options in the iTunes preferences burning menu. Also, both drives are detected in System Profiler as being fully supported for disc burning. When I deleted the iTunes preference files and inserted a music CD into either drive iTunes would auto-launch and bring up the track information. After about an hour it stopped being able to do this again. The next thing I'll do is reinstall iTunes 4. Over the weekend I installed the 10.2.5 combo updater to correct a problem with my firewire DVD-CD-RW drive so maybe something that iTunes 4 needs got overwritten with an older version. |

This is exactly the PCI bus bandwidth issue. This issue is NOT LIMITED TO OLD WORLD SYSTEMS. You can go over to Apple's discussion forums and see people with newish supported hardware experiencing this same issue. However because our systems do have less PCI bus bandwidth available, it does seem to show up more readily. My G3/500 PTP runs itunes 4 perfectly and I have not seen this issue on it, so it might be some combo/arrangement of hardware you have. Maybe 10.3 will address this? Probably not, but we can dream. This sounds like it might be the sound problem that a fair number of people are reporting. In some cases, at least, it is related to the use of an ATA PCI card for ATA drives (although not everyone with an ATA PCI card reports this--I haven't been able to reproduce it, unfortunately). Also, there may be messages in your system log (/var/log/system.log) that could shed some light on this. |
