Passwords Gone! Help! |

I'm currently running OS 10.2.5 and last night I upgraded the java script and quicktime to 6.2. I was able to restart and enter my password, no problem. Then I shut down for the night. This morning the passwords will not work. There are five accounts and all five passwords do not work. After three attempts the password hint window displays ok, but the passwords must be corrupt or something. Does anyone have any idea how to get myself out of this and keep the system intact? Keith |

I used the OSX Install disk and reset the passwords. Rebooted back in OSX and none of the passwords worked. Then I thought it might be a matter of corruption. I run Norton Utilities and found a problem in the directories that it could not fix. I booted with the install OSX again and created a root account (just in case). Then I noticed there was a disk utility. The utility found the same errors that Norton found, but it fixed them! Ran Norton again and it found some additional problems but fixed those as well. Everything is back to normal and it was quite an interesting exercise. |

Is your caps lock key off? That was probably the first thing you checked... You can use XpostFacto to boot an OS X Install disk which has a menu command to reset the passwords. Maybe that will fix your problem. |
