Running a G4 500 SCSI server with 641 ram, OS 9.2.2 as a computer, that came with no modem, but has installed both Grappler SCSI and Stealth software, the latest versions. With a new Robotics 56KV90, Sportster modem that gives a good 45666bps hit 90% of the time...Two other Mac's in the house, a B&W G3 450 and a Beige G3 333 are almost the same with like ram, Apple 9.X OS's, and external modems.(I have not tried OS X 10.2 on these other Macs). I am unable to conmnect to my dial up ISP in OS X 10.2...I have not tried any version later that 10.2.Should I, in hopes this has been corrected? All of these setups work fine in OS 9X up to 9.2.2, and in OSX in the first early pay version after the Beta. I have all versions of OS X up to 10.2.0. After fighting this for several weeks I have tried many different modem strings, reinstalled the program several times, added nothing in software except the latest versions of Grappler and Stealth. Including the recent Apple modem software update. Then I gave up and archived everything OS X. I note on the Apple write in tech discussion pages others have a similar problem... I can connmect to the ISP, but it immediately disconnects.. The only modem string I can get to work to connect is the early Hayes 56K string, and it is not the right one...None of the Robotics strings early and late in any Mac OS back to OS 8.6 I have will work. Is this me, the Apple program or my ISP which is totally PC country here and does no have a Mac in house? Of course they say is me or my Mac or software and not them... They are quite candid about not caring for Macs... Any ideas anyone Thanks in advance. Jim |

I do not claim to have an answer for you, but would suggest that an ISP that is openly hostile to Macs should be replaced with a more Mac friendly ISP. Beyond that, if you can get the hardware to work with their system just fine in OS 9 as well as 10.2.0, that that is the immediate problem. Do get the downloadable updaters and bring it on up to 10.2.6. I think I recall there being a number of modem-related things in some of those. |
