Hi, Thought some of you might need to know this... According to one of my buddies who works with Apple, the 10.1 (Puma) Installation CD is known to be problematic. Apple has received a lot of complaints from customers. In fact, it is posted as a known issue in Apple KB at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106782 and http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106693 .Although there is no scratches on the CD, you have clean the CD drive using CD cleaner/alchohol and you can copy all its content to hard disk, but it will generate "File could not be written" error during every installation - especially if it is being used with an older Apple CD drive with older firmware/ROM. FYI, None of the Apple CD-ROM drive's firmware is upgrade-able. That explains why I was unable to install Puma onto my Sonnet G3/450MHz 7600. Although I got the replaced CD from Apple, but it is still generating "File could not be written" error. I have no choice but to install it onto my PowerMac G4. I had to purchase 10.2 (Jaguar) and it is working fine now on my 7600. In my opinion, if you are using any Power Mac before G4 - forget about Puma, stay with Cheetah, purchase Jaguar now or wait for Panther (with hope). Cheers, Marcus |
